Why did the snow turn orange in Russia?

This weekend, skiers and snowboarders in Sochi, Russia came across an unusual sight: orange snow!

Recently, the white snow changed color due to a sandstorm that blew in from the Sahara desert in North Africa.

“We’re skiing on Mars today,” one social media user exclaimed as he skied down the slope.

The sandstorm made its way through Greece all the way to Russia and was so big it could actually be seen on NASA satellite images.

The Athens Observatory said last Friday that it was one of the largest transfers of sand from the Sahara desert to Greece in history.

African sand covered the entire country and dust concentrations were the highest in the last 10 years, according to the Observatory’s meteorological service. The reddish dust caused limited visibility for people in Sochi.

This phenomenon could be seen in other places in Eastern Europe, such as Bulgaria or Romania.
