Why and how you should insulate, seal and waterproof the windows of your house

For many people, the cold and humidity that enter their home is a headache. The first reaction is always the same: go out and buy heating equipment, pour products on the walls to get rid of fungi, or despair at leaks.

Although sometimes it may be really necessary to solve a structural problem in the home, on other occasions the issue is much simpler and easier to fix: as simple as sealing the window joints well.

When the frames are not well sealed to the walls, wind or rainwater can seep through them, but it is easy to waterproof these joints. In this way, in addition to getting rid of humidity, the house will be much better insulated from the cold; you will need less energy to heat it (and also cool it) and you will not only solve your problem, but you will take care of the planet!

To seal the window joints you need:

  • Masking tape
  • Spatula
  • Transparent silicone or wood color
  • soapy water

Process

1. First of all, to properly insulate a window joint, you must remove the previous damaged insulation, if any, and scrape the joint well, removing any adherence and dirt, in all cases.

2. Then, with a cloth, remove all the remaining dirt. The surface must be very clean for the silicone to adhere.

3. Cover the areas near the joints with masking tape (resistant paper tape, for painters or home work), so that we do not dirty the window or the wall with silicone more than necessary and that the joint is neat.

4. Apply a neutral silicone for universal use on the joint. It can be transparent or brown, if the window is made of wood. For this you can use a special applicator gun or also get a silicone that already comes with an applicator nozzle.

5. To flatten the silicone, you should simply use your finger, but first you must pass it through soapy water so that the silicone does not adhere to the skin.

6. When the silicone is set but not completely dry, you can remove the tape (a few minutes after application).

7. Done! The joint will now be completely sealed.
