Which Mexican airline is best? Volaris, VivaAerobús, Interjet and Aeroméxico –

Volaris, VivaAerobús, Interjet and Aeroméxico are the main airlines in Mexico and if you are wondering which is better, here is a comparison so you can choose.

This information was updated in October 2020 with the new rates: Viva Zero and Vuela Básica from VivaAerobús and Volaris.

Which Mexican airline is cheapest?

Although a lot will depend on your route and whether you got the flight on sale, the airlines that usually offer cheaper flights are Volaris and VivaAerobús. For its part, Aeroméxico usually offers the most expensive fares and this is basically because it is not a low-cost airline like the previous ones.

Travel tip. However, don’t get carried away with the idea that one airline is always cheaper than another. On my last trip from Orlando to Mexico City my flight was cheaper with Aeroméxico than with Volaris and Internet, which also offer this route. I recommend using comparators, I use them to review several airlines with a single search.

Which airline allows you more carry-on luggage?

Interjet and Aeroméxico, in their cheapest fares, allow the same carry-on luggage: a suitcase or backpack measuring 55 x 40 x 25 centimeters. To this you can add a personal item that can be a handbag, a laptop bag or a small backpack. Although there are no specific sizes, ideally this item should not exceed 40 x 20 x 25 centimeters. The important thing is that both items do not exceed 10 kg.

The cheapest Volaris and Viva Aerobús, Viva Zero and Vuela Básica rates only include one personal item.

Which airline allows you to carry a checked suitcase?

In the case of Aeroméxico, its basic fare for traveling in Mexico, to the United States and Canada does not include checked luggage, so you can only travel with carry-on luggage. If you want to include a suitcase you have to change to the tourist rate or pay for the suitcase directly.

Important. Aeroméxico’s tourist fare is the cheapest that does include checked baggage and is the only one offered on flights to the Caribbean, South America, Europe and Asia, so if you fly to or from these places your suitcase would be included.

VivaAerobus and Volaris never include checked baggage in their fares.

Which airplanes are most comfortable?

Volaris and VivaAerobús use the same aircraft: A320. Volaris has a space between seats of 76 cm and VivaAerobús has 73 cm. Interjet offers space of 83 cm. While in Aeroméxico it will depend on your route and the plane you get but it is around 78 cm.

And the food?

Aeroméxico and Intejet offer food on all their flights. In the case of Aeroméxico it can be just a snack or a complete meal for long flights, while on Intejet it is only a sweet or salty snack, depending on the time of the flight.

Volaris and VivaAerobús do not offer free food, only for sale.
