When is White Week 2022 and why is it celebrated?

To adjust the festivities of each autonomous community well, King Juan Carlos I created the white week, in which a school week would be interspersed for schools and the other for university students. Here we will tell you when is white week 2022 and why is it celebrated.

It is necessary to differentiate the types of white week, one is intended for schools and the other for university students. In the first case there is a week to organize snow trips for students and teachers. Each community has its respective calendar. In the second case, it does not correspond to a vacation week, it is used for study.

This week is for the promotion of sports among students, so that they spread healthily in contact with nature. Not all the autonomous communities join this white week, but only Andalusia, Asturias, Cantabria, Extremadura, Ceuta and Aragón.

When is White Week 2022

Not all Autonomous Communities apply this White week, and the main reason for this is economic, since there are families who cannot make certain expenses because they would represent a great burden and they cannot go on a trip to enjoy the snow. Next you will know the 2022 dates of each Autonomous Community that celebrates White Week:

  • Andalusia: the white week in Andalusia is from February 25 to March 6. These dates will be added to the school calendar as non-school days.
  • Madrid: it is the same date as Andalusia, February 25 to March 6. Non-school days will be the 25th and 28th of the same month.
Catalonia: in the same way as Andalusia and Madrid, the rest dates for both students and teachers are from February 25 to March 6. It is the power of each educational center to choose the school days they wish.
Valencian Community: the breaks for the Valencian Community will be from February 25 to March 6. It will be up to each educational center to choose the non-school days.
  • Galicia: the days of rest for Galicians will be from February 25 to March 6and each educational center will choose which days will not correspond to school activities.
  • In the same way as the Communities already mentioned: in Castilla y León, Navarra, the Canary Islands, Castilla la Mancha, Murcia, Aragón, the Balearic Islands, Extremadura, Asturias and Cantabria, it will be a week off from February 25 to March 6where the respective educational centers of each Community will select the non-school days.

Why is White Week celebrated?

The pioneer of the White Week was the King of Spain, Juan Carlos I, who established a week of no school activities, in order to balance the lack of public holidays in some Autonomous Communities. For example, the Malaga Fair is held outside the school period, in August. In Seville, on the other hand, the fair is held in April, so students have more days off to later enjoy the fair.

The director of each school will be in charge of taking the initiative to organize a trip for the benefit of the students’ enjoyment in the snow, for example skiing in the Aragonese Pyrenees, Andorra or Sierra Nevada.

The idea is that schoolchildren take advantage of these days to practice sports, have fun in contact with nature and interact with people around them. This is a way to promote positive values that can only be achieved outside the classroom.

The situation of the universities at White Week is different. Instead of taking advantage of those days to rest, the students prepare harder for the next exams that take place in the month of January after having enjoyed the Christmas days with the family.

An example of the White Week is that of the European University of Madrid, which organizes activities in which sports personalities participate. In this way, the students will be able to know the work carried out by them. Last year it was with Zinedine Zidane that he gave the chair of teamwork. The workshop on “values in professional sport” was also addressed, in which Rafael Nadal’s coach, Tony Nadal, participated.

How is White Week celebrated?

Last year the White Week coincided with the Carnival festivities, ending in February. That is to say, the celebration was doubly used. There were ski activities in the main facilities, with night skiing activities for adults, gastronomy or the descent to Sierra Nevada.

This year unfortunately the white week dates will not coincide with the Carnival. But that is not an impediment for you to plan your enjoyment in the snow. If skiing is not your thing, then you can plan a walk through all the cities where Carnivals are celebrated.

There are other activities that are organized during the Week, for example, in Malaga they plan workshops for children. This is the case of the Fundación Picasso-Museo Casa Natal, the Museo Picasso Málaga (MPM), the Center for Contemporary Art (CAC Málaga) or the Museum of Contemporary Spanish Engraving (MGEC).

Also music activities promoted by the Interactive Museum of Music (MIMMA), the Center for University Initiatives or the Black Box Room in Marbella. In the latter, workshops, sports activities, painting and puppets have been organized.

Still planning snow travel activities, taking into account that the White Week is not official. These activities do not involve skiing, but activities where you have contact with nature continue to be planned.
