For decades, rumors spread that valuable material could exist within the walls of Tutankhamun’s tomb, including the body of Queen Nefertiti. It is a widespread belief. Those treasures were, it was thought, in the hidden chambers in the walls of the pyramid.
But an investigation led by a renowned university proved otherwise. Not only that there was no treasure in the hidden chambers: but the chambers did not really exist.
Tutankhamun was a pharaoh belonging to the 18th dynasty of Egypt, who reigned from 1336/5 to 1327/5 BC. C. It is believed that his mother was Queen Nefertiti, however, despite extensive research, this has not been proven.
His sudden death led to his being buried in a small tomb, very different from what was customary for kings in ancient Egypt, which is why he was hidden from the eyes of researchers for decades.
What is in the tomb of Tutankhamun?
The relatively small size of her sedimented tomb over the years was the reason it was not discovered until the 20th century, when Howard Carter found it intact in 1922. Its discovery and the treasures found within it renewed public interest in Ancient Egypt, becoming the funerary mask of the pharaoh in the most popular image.
The discovery of his tomb, almost intact, was a fundamental contribution to the understanding of Egyptian history and culture. He made it easier to bring to light a considerable amount of jewelry, furniture, weapons and various utensils, allowing this to broaden the knowledge of this civilization.
A recent investigation carried out by specialists from the Polytechnic University of Turin has spread what some feared: there is nothing hidden between the walls of the tomb.
In the investigation they used a high-precision radar that manages to explore the rock and concluded that there is nothing behind the wall of the tomb, and detailed the Ministry of Antiquities from Egypt in a statement: “perhaps it is a bit disappointing that there is nothing behind the tombs. walls of Tutankhamun’s tomb, but I think that, on the other hand, it shows good scientific research,” said Franceso Porcelli, who led the research.
The curse of Tutankhamen
Behind the figure of Ttankamón there is great mystery. The one about the treasures in his tomb is not the only legend. The fact that several explorers who participated in the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb died shortly after, some in strange circumstances, has given rise to many hypotheses.
Science has several hypotheses; one is that in the stale air of Tutankhamun’s tomb there would be microscopic fungal spores, preserved for several millennia, which were still able to infect several of these explorers by breathing the stale air. The tomb’s discoverer, Howard Carter, died of natural causes many years later.
Surely, however, even if the causes of each of the deaths are established, the rumors will not stop: something has been generated around this story and Tutankhamun and his powerful figure; and it will be difficult to end the myth.
