In Overhistory we have already told you about the Middle Ages, but we should not confuse this with Middle-earth and that has been made into fiction on numerous occasions, as happened in JR Tolkien’s successful saga “The Lord of the Rings” and whose volume “The Fellowship of the Ring” has led to a project that would allow us to know and be able to see what Middle Earth would be like seen from space.
What would Middle Earth look like from space?
More than 1,000 pages of “The Lord of the Rings” were dedicated to being able to describe and then show in the cinema with the films that have been made, such as the plains, valleys, cities and palaces of Middle-earth, which was also explained in detail in “The Silmarillion” as well as in “The Hobbit.”
Surely if you have read any of these sagas or have seen the movies you will already know about the beauty of that Middle Earth, but now we could also see it from space thanks to the project that is being developed on the occasion of the 6th anniversary of the publication of «The Fellowship of the Ring».
A team of Danish programmers has taken as a point of reference some of the descriptions given in the mentioned books, and have created a computerized model on a planetary scale of Tokien’s fantasy world using the graphics engine outer.
MeDEM (acronym for Middle Earth Digital Elevation Model), is the name of the project in question and it is quite impressive if we take into account that it allows us to observe the Eye of Sauron from space. It’s also so detailed that it allows us to zoom in from hundreds of miles up and end up on top of Bilbo’s house in Hobbiton.
From the meticulous descriptions in Tolkien’s work it has been achieved collect data that allows them to create a world in which they are detailed geographical accidents, regions and even climates that make everything seem much more real than ever.
The project has not finished yet, although we can download a demo of the planet they are creating and shaping. To download the program You must install the Outerra motor first and that we can also get for free.
