They say that when Gandhi was studying law in London, a professor named Peters did not treat him well. But Gandhi was never intimidated by it, quite the opposite. She never missed an opportunity to interact with him.
One day, Peters was having lunch in the University dining hall. Seeing him, the student came over with his tray and sat down next to him. The professor, haughty, said:
-Young Gandhi, don’t you understand? A pig and a bird do not sit down to eat together.
To which Gandhi replied:
-Stay calm professor, I’m flying away- and he changed tables.
After that encounter, Professor Peters decided that he had to get revenge. He then made the decision to put Gandhi to the test. He wanted to expose his ignorance and brutality.
So, in the next class, he challenged him:
-Gandhi, you are walking down the street and you come across a bag. Inside her there is wisdom and a lot of money, but she can only keep one of the two things. Which one does he take?
Gandhi replied without hesitation:
-Of course the money, professor!
Peters smiled, satisfied, thinking he had embarrassed the student:
-I, in his place, would have grabbed the wisdom, don’t you think?
To which Gandhi replied:
–Each one takes what has no teacher.
Professor Peters, already hysterical, forgot his manners. He just wanted to humiliate Gandhi! So, he took the student’s test from him and writes “IDIOT”.
Gandhi received the sheet and sat down. After a few minutes he turned to the teacher and said:
-Professor Peters, you have signed the sheet for me, but you did not give me the note.
Many times people try to harm us with offenses, but the truth is that we are the ones who have the power to decide whether or not to let ourselves be offended.
