Weekly Challenge 113: The city in black and white

We like black and white (and you know it). This week we have two protagonists, the city and black and white.

How does it work? (Reminder)

Every week I will propose a new challenge, it is a topic that you will have to capture in a photograph and upload it to the Facebook page of the blog, putting in the description the keyword that I will indicate for each topic. The themes will be varied, from portraits to Macro photography, through landscapes, black and white photography, or babies. The topics will be proposed on Saturdays, so that you have all the Weekend to work them. You will have one week to upload your photograph (one photo per participant), until Friday of the following week. On Friday or Saturday I will update the article with the photo that has captivated me the most and I will propose a new topic, and so on…

Weekly Challenge 113: The city in black and white

You know that we fall in love with black and white, for many reasons, so many that we couldn’t resist publishing The Complete Guide to Black and White Photography.

And since I want you to practice black and white photography, I suggest you tell us what is happening in your city but taking away the colors, concentrating all your attention on the light, the textures, the shadows, the rhythm, the history… Working black and white as it deserves and avoiding these mistakes. That’s why I recommend that you shoot in color so as not to lose “hyper” valuable information and then pass it to grayscale with an editor. It does not matter if you live in a big city or in a small town, everyone has their stories and their own life, tell us about it and leave us breathless.

As usual, to participate in this week’s challenge upload your photo to the Facebook wall from the Photographer’s Blog: In the description of the photo please mention the keyword “The city in black and white challenge” followed by a title of your choice.

Textures, geometries, lights and shadows, street stories… go hand in hand in black and white in your images. Here is a nice sample of it:

If you are a regular in challenges, you will know that the photographs that make me vibrate are those that transmit me beyond sharpness, contrast or any other technical aspect. If in addition, in this sense it is also a good photo, I can not stop applauding. Among the fantastic images that you have sent for this challenge, I want to highlight the one of Chema Usieto, (with a title that is not short, by the way 😉 , but with a title). I mean “Shanghai City Growth View Room”. It is a perfect grayscale photograph that includes all the tones, from the lowest to the highest, with fantastic light and good composition. I love the natural framing of the “piece” of the city that the author shows us. And I like that he captured it this way because it creates a huge visual contrast. This photograph causes an impact on the viewer due to the confrontation between the peace of the hotel room that acts as a refuge, a home, and the chaos of the city. Rest against noise, harmony against disorder. Many of us like to live in cities, with their services and comforts, but at the end of the day we need to isolate ourselves in our homes, flee from the traffic, the noise of the works, the hustle and bustle, the rush… This is exactly what this image. Congratulations Chem! And thanks to the rest of the participants, Shanghai grows as a city and you as photographers.
