Psoriasis is a disease that causes inflammation, redness, scaling and pain in the skin; although it can also affect the joints. Despite its appearance, it is not contagious.
The cause of its appearance lies in the immune system: T lymphocytes are activated and produce inappropriate responses, such as the dilation of blood vessels and the proliferation of skin cells. This is what causes the inflammation and the small red spots that usually characterize it.
Although the origin of this disease is not known, it is believed to be a genetic disease, although it can be triggered by hormonal changes, stress and other external factors.
In general, it is characterized by skin lesions of different sizes, reddened and covered by white scales; on the elbows, scalp, back, knees, or buttocks. Sometimes they can also cause pain.
types of psoriasis
First of all, the types of psoriasis can be: mild (when it covers 2% or less of the skin); moderate (when it covers between 2 and 10%); or severe (more than 10%).
But also, they can be differentiated by the shapes of the spots or scales:
In plaques: it is the most common and is characterized by scales made up of dead cells that come off, hurt and itch. It usually appears on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back.
Gotular: It is shaped like small, red drops. It is mainly found in the buttocks, upper arms, thighs and scalp areas.
Inverse or in folds: very common in smooth and dry skin, it is characterized by producing redness, inflammation, but not scales. It usually occurs in areas of the body with skin folds, usually in the armpits, groin, under the breasts.
Psoriatic arthritis: occurs when a person with psoriasis develops arthritis. This type produces joint pain, stiffness and swelling of the fingers and toes.
There are also other more aggressive types, but rare, such as the one with scales with pain on the tips of the fingers or the one where the bumps are filled with pus.
