Remember the part of Forrest Gump where Bubba kept going on about 1001 Shrimp Recipes?
It’s just that scene that I want to avoid with you when talking about layout types.
“Design in sauce, roast design, fried design, design sandwiches…”
While you may have Forrest’s patience, I highly doubt you’d want to know any depth about the history of my shrimp or the generations and generations of design guys.
So we are going to do this step by step and as entertaining as possible so that you only have to get up from the computer to get more water or coffee to continue reading.
It turns out that design is one of the oldest disciplines of man, in fact, there is a recognized book out there in which it is said that God is the first designer of the universe, creating us so perfect and making everything that comprises our body have a function.
But this time let’s not see God religiously, but as a character that itself has all the qualities of a designer.
See how old the design is?
Since graphic design is not everything in life, other types of design They live with you day by day and you don’t even realize it…
Let’s talk about it.
The difference between art and design
When we first talked about design, I told you that many people often believe that art and design are the same.
I also told you that anyone who didn’t know terms would tell you that all design is art because it makes you feel “something”.
But there is no statement further from reality than that, because they are not and will never be the same.
Yes, it is true that both are disciplines but, They have different purposes or functions.
It will always be subject to a perspective or a purpose that the designer wants to give it; besides that it is also subject to the way in which you want the consumer behave in certain situations.
On the other hand, art is not due to the user, but is a personal expression of the artist. His perspective of things, the compositional elements are not subject to a functional purpose but rather a sensory one.
Those are the two big differences between art and design.
Now, the word design is not a concept that encompasses a single branch, rather it is a discipline that can be immersed in any other sub-discipline. This is how the design types are classified:
These are the types of design that exist
Interior design
This is the complement of architecture and industrial engineering.
Also known as interior design, it specializes in giving life, functionality and a personalized aesthetic to different spaces.
It is not subject only to industrial areas and companies as it is usually related to. Today interior designers are highly sought after by people seeking to create the home of their dreams as balamoda.
Industrial design
It is the type of design that, in my opinion, has the greatest weight at a historical and cultural level.
And it is that industrial design is responsible for creating all the devices, tools, containers, devices and other utensils that we use all day.
Think about the design of the disposable bottle of Coca Cola, in the design of your favorite Nike shoesin the design of a cardboard package in which your favorite Christmas cookies come.
All of that is industrial design.
The machinery that makes all the parts of other machinery is also born from industrial design.
Industrial design is not born solely and exclusively from the appearance of machines, but you can see it from the design of the first aqueduct systems built in Rome.
old right?
Well yes, it is an approximate of what would be the genesis of industrial design.
If you still want to have a more recent example of what industrial design is, you can think of IKEA furniture Most of which are the Swedish giant’s own collections.
Fashion design
The kind of job that every girl dreams of at least once in her life.
The world of catwalks, styling and tasteful trends in the world of fashion. But this design does not stop at that brief and banal concept that I just gave you.
A fashion designer creates different clothes, jewelry, shoes, and accessories based on principles of styling and proportion that have been studied for many years by their predecessors.
Graphic design
This is the type of design that is most in demand in the business world.
And it is so versatile that other specialties are derived from it.
The graphic designer is that professional who has the ability to create all kinds of visual or audiovisual pieces such as brand identity (logos, isotypes, imagotypes…).
I think that we have been talking a lot about this specialty, so I will tell you little about it in this section.
textile design
Textile design is the basis of fashion design, from which all the fabrics that will be used in this second specialty are born.
From my perspective, textile design is as complex as fashion design itself, and I would even consider it an art.
It should be noted that within this discipline other disciplines converge such as graphic design, fashion design and I dare say that it also has a bit of industrial design.
Editorial design
It is the brother of graphic design.
(I won’t say twin, or younger brother because I don’t want to hurt anyone’s sensibilities).
Editorial design is married to print media, lithography and so on.
If the main function is to project or communicate the same thing that graphic design communicates and projects, only at a unique and exclusively physical level. (tangible, on paper…).
I want to confess to you that editorial design is so rich and complex that we could dedicate an entire post to it on the types of formats in which it can be applied and what are the parts of each process.
Do you want to read more about how editorial design unfolds in the present?
Since today almost all the content we consume is digital, there is a possibility that this discipline could be somewhat left out.
But I’ll confess that to you another time because I love seeing how you bite your nails waiting for the next content.
Everything will depend on you beauty…
What do you think of this scene we just did?
Did it remind you of Forrest Gump?
It’s kind of hard to talk about design without sounding like a whole geekBecause as you may have noticed, design is an infinite universe that will always propose new solutions to whatever you need in your life.
And with this I want to arrive at what is the genesis of all planning, of all success, of all stories of inspiration.
Interesting, right?
We see it in the comments.
I send you a warm hug (impregnated with Pigments and graphite).
