Have you ever noticed that your menstrual cycles vary according to the season? Many women have the impression that in the summer their period is more abundant, but in the winter they perceive the opposite, that it is less.
A scientific study confirmed that it is not just about personal impressions, but that seasonal factors really influence the menstrual cycle.
The results indicate that the most important climatic factor is sunlight. Exposure to it generates various effects in the body, and one of them is to stimulate the activity of the ovaries through hormones. On the contrary, its absence results in reduced ovarian activity, which in turn causes longer and less abundant menstrual cycles.
For this study, the menstrual cycles of 129 Russian women were analyzed. Serum levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin were studied, as well as ovarian follicle size.
The researchers found that, compared to winter, FSH secretion and ovulation frequency increased in summer. These factors result in a shorter menstrual cycle during the summer and a longer menstrual cycle during the winter, by a difference of almost a day.
They determined that summer heat works as a vasodilator, while in winter, cold acts as a vasoconstrictor. They also highlighted the role of vitamin D, which is received directly from sunlight, and whose deficiency can worsen mood and exacerbate premenstrual symptoms.
It is well known that in winter the days are shorter and duller. Lack of sunlight decreases vitamin and dopamine levels, which are very important for achieving a positive mood. So in addition to longer cycles, some women may experience bouts of sadness, general lack of interest, or depression.
Additionally, the cold months are associated with a more caloric diet, less exercise, and a less active social life, factors that can worsen the menstrual experience even more.
