The golden berry, also called “wild tomatoes”, “aguaymanto” or “capulĂ”, are native fruits of Latin American origin (specifically from Peru), which have been known since the time of the Incas.
In those times it was one of the preferred plants in the garden of the nobles and it was particularly cultivated in the sacred valley. It generally grows in the hot, dry areas near the Andes; and can reach a height between 0.6 to 0.9 meters.
Although its fruits are called berries, they are actually something closer to a tomatillo. They are yellow-orange berries, round in shape and 1.5 centimeters to 2 centimeters in diameter. They have a shell that should not be eaten (it is toxic), and that has the texture of paper.
When ripe, golden berries have a peculiar sweet-sour flavor or something bitter but pleasant.
The importance of this fruit, whose scientific name is physalis peruviana, is due to its mineral and vitamin content; essential elements for the growth, development and correct functioning of the different human organs.
They are a source of provitamin A (3,000 IU of carotene per 100 g) and vitamin C, as well as some B vitamins (thiamine, niacin, and vitamin b12). Their protein and phosphorus levels are exceptionally high, but their calcium levels are low.
Although in some places it can be difficult to get them fresh, you can buy them dehydrated, and they will retain many of their properties.
Health benefits
Golden berries are excellent for the digestive system, since they contain high amounts of fiber, which makes it easier for the bowel movement, and helps to eliminate toxins.
They protect the colon, stomach and intestine from the proliferation of cancer cells.
Because they are diuretics, they are also recommended for prostate problems.
In addition, due to the vitamins they contain, they help purify the blood, tone the optic nerve and relieve oropharyngeal conditions.
Although they are useful for treating or preventing many typical diseases of old age, they are also ideal fruits for children and students, because they are energy foods that clear the mind.
Other properties are also attributed to them, such as lowering blood cholesterol levels, promoting wound healing, reducing bronchial complications and counteracting the symptoms of menopause.
How to consume them
If you can easily get them in your region, it is best to incorporate them fresh into your diet. If not, you can look for them dehydrated, and add a handful every day to your smoothies, yogurt or cereals. In some regions it is customary to make sweet with them.
Whether it’s for health reasons, or just to enjoy the taste of a new fruit, you won’t regret trying them if you’ve never done it before.
