Robotics continues to evolve in leaps and bounds, between the fascination influenced by cinema, television and literature, and the fear for your job. Every day we see news of prototypes that look like humanoids or more assembly line style robots like this one called Hadrian. X and created by an Australian company called Fastbrick Robotics that if a bricklayer sees it, he won’t like it at all.
There are several technological and scientific revolutions underway: biotechnology, artificial intelligence and robotics. The last two are of concern, among other things, because the danger to the employment outlook, with millions of jobs considered lostalthough, at least so far in history, automation or the Internet have created more jobs than they have destroyed.
A constructive revolution
Australian company FBR has taken on an ambitious challenge in the construction world: to transform the way bricks are traditionally laid in masonry walls. To achieve this goal, FBR has developed a revolutionary robot called Hadrian Xdesigned for handle 500 blocks per hour and build the exterior and interior walls of a house in just one daywhich is equivalent to covering about 120 square meters.
Hadrian X It is a truck equipped with a 32-metre-long telescopic boom, designed to lift walls up to three stories high from the edge of a road. It is also capable of completing the walls of a “standard double-brick house” in a single day.
The secret
The innovative feature of Hadrian X lies in its ability to handle blocks of different sizes, including large bricks up to 600mm x 400mm x 300mm and weighing up to 45kg. It uses a special adhesive instead of mortar, which increases the strength of the walls. This modular approach allows it to make height cuts in the blocks, which speeds up the construction process.
FBR has already demonstrated the effectiveness of Hadrian X in several construction projects. In May, they announced the completion of a house composed of approximately 4,300 concrete masonry units. In September, they carried out a project of 16 semi-detached houses. In addition, they recently managed to build a structure with large-format blocks at a rate of more than 240 pieces per hour, even reaching peaks of 326 blocks per hour.
Ambitious goals
FBR aims to revolutionise the construction industry, which has maintained a virtually unchanged brick-laying methodology for millennia. Hadrian X use a model CAD in 3D and a process that generates less waste than traditional methods.
The company also employs optimization software to translate designs into reality, minimizing block handling and waste to improve efficiency in residential construction.
A key and priority market
For now, Spanish bricklayers can rest easy. FBR’s robot promises to revolutionize construction, but is looking towards the United States marketwhere its technology could make a difference in the way buildings and homes are built.
With Hadrian Xthe construction of the future is becoming faster, more efficient and more sustainable, and promises to forever change the way we view bricklaying in the construction industry. Construction, engineering, logistics, healthcare… more and more sectors are embracing robotics as a necessary complement, towards progressive mastery.
