Wash clothes without consuming electricity and saving water. It’s possible? The Yirago company has made it a reality through Drumi, an ecological washing machine that works with a pedal, takes 6 minutes to wash and only needs 10 liters of water for a wash (when normally a common washing machine consumes between 50/100 litres).
The appliance is small and can wash a batch of 5-7 pieces of laundry at a time, so you won’t have to wait until you have enough dirty clothes to fill a washing machine or even if you just want to wash one item.
Drumi simulates the typical cycle of a washing machine, but the difference is that it uses the centrifugal force provided by a foot-operated pedal to activate it. How is the logistics? Each load requires 5 liters for the wash cycle and another 5 for the rinse. Water, soap and clothing are introduced. 3 minutes are pedaled for washing -depending on how many garments are loaded-, after which the soapy water is removed. Then another 5 liters of water are introduced for rinsing, which takes 2 minutes. The water is removed again and finally the remaining 1 minute is pedaled to eliminate the excess water and thus simulate the spin. The portable washing machine has the potential to be built from 40% recycled material, adding another sustainable property to those that already owns:

- Time saving: the washing cycles are around 6 minutes and you avoid having to go to the laundromat.
- Sustainable: it is an electricity-free process thanks to the pedal operation. Uses 80% less detergent and water than a regular washing machine.
- Easy to store: thanks to its small size.
- Economic: it has no energy cost and uses little water.
