A life full of strange and tragic circumstances

At birth, he was baptized with the name of his dead brother. Something that looks like a bad omen. From a young age, he had a peculiar character that oscillated between volatility and introversion. He suffered many failures in his life.

He was the son of a very strict Protestant pastor. He spent his childhood and adolescence between various colleges and boarding schools. At the age of 16, he started working in an art company, thanks to which he was able to move to London.

His stay in London was marked by a disappointment in love. He fell in love with Eugénie Loyer, but was abruptly rejected. To palliate his sentimental wound, he turned to extreme religious fanaticism.

He was unlucky in love. He was rejected by all the women with whom he wanted to have a relationship. His destiny would be painting, to which he began to dedicate himself at the age of 27. It was in Paris that he joined the group of Post-Impressionists.

His dark friendship with Paul Gauguin

They had met in bohemian circles in Paris. Later, they struck up a very disparate friendship. Gauguin was burlesque, constantly making fun of the shy Van Gogh. The latter was respectful and too tolerant.

Both shared an address in the Yellow House, in the town of Arles. However, what began as a friendship ended in serious fights. In a fit of rage, Van Gogh is said to have chased his companion with a knife.

Failing to hit Gauguin, the Dutchman lopped off his ear. He then wrapped it up and took it as a gift to a young prostitute with whom he had been in a relationship. The result was that the painter ended up in a psychiatric center.

The final stage in the life of the Dutch artist

His last days were spent in the town of Auvers-sur-Oise. There he painted 70 paintings in 70 days. However, on July 29, 1890, he returned home with a gunshot wound to the chest and died.

It has always been said that it was a suicide. However, it is said that a 16-year-old named René Secrétan may have accidentally shot him. The boy was playing with a revolver and a bullet fell into the painter’s chest.

Today the name of this painter is acclaimed throughout the world. In the Netherlands, there is a place designed to pedal over van Gogh’s Starry Night, alluding to one of the artist’s most famous paintings.

Also, his paintings are used in the coloring books of great museums in the world that you can download for free. Children enjoy the enormous color of these works.
