The roots of this organization have their beginning with the work of an important character in the social history of Swiss: Henri Dunant (Nobel Peace Prize of 1901). He himself deeply experienced the aftermath of the battle of Solferino in 1859, while on a business trip. All the memoirs, experiences and recollections of him were written down and then published in a book called A Memory of Solferino.

All the observations and ideals expressed by Dunant within this work were those who inspired a group of young Swiss to create an aid organization that had no borders: the Red Cross.

This is how during the Geneva Convention of the year 1863, five citizens appear presenting the project that would shape the Red Crossdefending the ideals of Dunant to protect and heal the wounded during combat. These five characters who gave birth to the organization were Guillaume Henri Dufoura Swiss Army general and writer of military treatises who became the committee’s chairman during the organization’s first year, Gustave Moyniera young lawyer who from that moment on dedicated his full life to the Red Cross, louis appia Y Theodore Maunoir (both doctors) and Dunant.

Currently the Red Cross It is made up of three basic elements: National Red Cross Society (including Red Crescits in Muslim countries and Red Lion and Sun in Iran), the League of Red Cross Societiesinaugurated in 1919 and in charge of coordinating international societies under the proposals of the American Red Cross; and the International Committee of the Red Crossan independent group of Swiss citizens who intervene as a neutral body in times of war.

The International Red Cross was nominated for the Nobel Prizes of Peace in the years 1917, 1944 and 1963, being an example of the humanitarian predisposition in times that are most needed.
