Teaching about the care and preservation of the environment is one of the goals of this eco-friendly school in Bali, Indonesia. The Green School, as this sustainable and ecological educational institution is known, has been built with bamboo in the middle of the jungle. Its natural and peaceful environment helps the hundreds of students who go to it to learn about nature and its importance in everyone’s lives.

What is The Green School?

The Green School is an educational institution that teaches courses related to the care and conservation of the environment. It is made from bamboo and is located in the jungle of Bali, Indonesia.

In this school, the classes that are taught are divided into four sections around a “holistic education”: socio-emotional, creative, intellectual and physical. This form of instruction also leads students to engage more closely with nature. In the latter, the structure of the institution also helps, whose design lacks walls, which allows the jungle to be visualized.

Despite being located in Indonesia, the institution provides education to students from all over the world. It currently has more than 400 children enrolled, of 33 different nationalities, of these, only 20% are Indonesian, and most of them are on scholarships. When they graduate, they will receive a diploma that will allow them to access official universities.

How was it founded?

The idea of creating the Green School born from the mind of John Hardy. He tells of having been inspired after seeing the documentary “An Inconvenient Truth”, developed by the former US Vice President Al Gore. The impact of this tape on Hardy was such that he believes it changed his life. After being horrified by the vision of the future, he decided to contribute to a change of mentality that helps to conserve the environment.

Hardy carried out his idea and created the Green School in 2008. The institution’s contributions earned it several awards. Among them the International Award for the Green School on Earth. Since its creation, until now, the school has been growing, drawing the attention of ecologists and naturalists around the world. Of which several have come to move to Bali, this in order to give their children the possibility of accessing a greener education.

The project has drawn so much attention worldwide that foreign students now make up the majority at the Green School in Bali.
