The famous “pig island” of the Bahamas that went from being paradise to hell for these animals

There are several theories as to how this colony of pigs came to such a remote island. There are those who say that some sailors left them there to eat them on their return, but then they never came back to look for them. There is also the hypothesis that they were part of a boat that was shipwrecked and they swam to the island.

Until now, these friendly animals have lived in peace in the Exuma district of the Bahamas. Although the uninhabited island is called Big Major Cayis popularly known as the “Pig Island” due to the presence of the little pigs. They have made the sand of the beaches their home and it didn’t take long for them to become expert swimmers to cool off.

Pigs are a tourist attraction in the area

There are many curious people who want to see them, caress them and take pictures with them. Pigs are delighted with human visits and their attitude is usually friendly.

A few years ago, the model Irina Shayk shared a curious photo of her vacation in the Bahamas on her social networks. The then partner of Cristiano Ronaldo appeared on the paradisiacal beach surrounded by these pigs. A curious picture that caused a lot of sympathy, but that made many people want to take selfies with the pigs.

But this was not the case, and what seemed like fun turned into a nightmare for these pigs who lived in a paradise. Authorities in the Bahamas have located several of these dead swimming pigs. Terrible news that could wipe out a population of about twenty pigs.

They are still investigating the causes of the tragedy, but everything indicates that they died from the alcohol that some tourists gave them, in addition to mistreating them so that they make poses and tricks to take their “selfies” to post on social networks.

The problem arises when tourists give them food that is not suitable for the pigs’ diet or, directly, supply them with alcohol for fun. The authorities of the area denounce some bad practices of the visitors: “We have people who come and give them beer, rum, and then ride on top of them.”

What is striking about this is that in the almost 30 years that the pigs have been on the island, it has never happened that so many have died suddenly.

As a preventive measure, the Minister of Agriculture, Alfred Gray, has prohibited tourists from providing any type of food to the swimming pigs: “People will be able to take pictures of them and see them swim, but nothing to give them food,” he explained.
