Surely at some time you got together to eat with your family or friends, and one of them brought or asked the waiter for a “light” soft drink, arguing that they were on a diet.
But, How true is that? Are sugar-free soft drinks “not fattening”?
Soft drinks that do not contain sugar are still sweet. Why? Well contain sweeteners, that is, synthetic sweeteners (often without calories) which are also related to the risk of obesity and health problems.
In this regard, a study entitled “Review of the nutritional benefits and risks of sweeteners” points out that: “The numerous studies available do not provide evidence that the consumption of artificial sweeteners used as sugar substitutes provides greater benefits in relation to weight control, blood glucose regulation in diabetic patients or the incidence of type 2 diabetes” .
On the other hand, the American scientific journal Diabetes Care published a study where it was related to people who drank sugar-free soft drinks every day had a 67% increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Other studies also emphasize that this type of soft drink can also lead to a compensatory consumption of sugar at other meals, by stimulation of sweet food receptors.
Besides this, sugar-free soft drinks are not “healthier” than those that do contain sugar, since they are generally made with preservatives, coloring and other artificial additives.
If you are looking to lose weight, choose better water and drink it throughout the day to hydrate yourself and also help control your appetite, which can sometimes be confused with thirst.
