A map is a geographical representation of the planet earth or of a region on a flat surface, this is the definition, although such representation also exists on spherical surfaces, as is the case with globes. When we add political to the word map, the result is a representation, generally on a small scale, in which the political and administrative divisions of a territory are displayed. This time we are going to focus on the Political map of North America and South America.
American continent
It is the second largest continent on Earth after Asia. It occupies much of the western hemisphere of the planet. It extends from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Diego Ramírez Islands in the south.at the confluence of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, which in turn delimit the continent to the east and west, respectively.
The surface of more than 43,316,000 km² makes this land mass the second largest in the globe, covering 8.4% of the total surface of the planet and 30.2% of the emerged land, it also concentrates almost 12% of the planet’s population. The largest urban agglomerations in the American continent are Mexico City, New York and São Paulo.
Due to its size and geographical characteristics, in some cultures the American continent is divided into North America, Central America, the Antilles and South America. The structuring of the American continent has always been a source of controversy since some geographers consider Central America and the Antilles as a subregion within North America, other geographers only distinguish between North America and South America, this distinction is more to their cultural characteristics, this is how they distinguish between Anglo-Saxon America and Latin America.
The Native American population appears to proceed from Eastern Asia, evolving for thousands of years without having contact with other continents, which caused a different development and evolution in both its fauna and flora.
Different cultures were also developed throughout its territory, generating their own Neolithic revolutions. From the arrival of the Spanish in 1492, the continent stopped being isolated to establish a very important social, commercial and ecological exchange with Eurasia and Africa.

How many countries does the map of America have?
The political map of the United States includes 35 independent countries and 23 other dependent territories, including three French offices abroad and one French group abroad, which is fully integrated politically into France and is also part of the European Union.
The formation of the current American states was strongly influenced by events in Europe. The Napoleonic Wars and the French conquest of the Iberian Peninsula facilitated the processes of independence in Latin America and marked a great difference between the consolidation of the Portuguese colonies and the division and confrontation of the Spanish colonies. These differences would result in the independence of the Portuguese colonies into one large state, Brazil, while the Spanish Empire disintegrated into 19 smaller states, although some efforts were sometimes made to join American alliances or projects.
