At least 18 elephant carcasses were discovered in the jungle of the state of Assamin northeastern India, the authorities reported on Friday (05.14.2021), opening an investigation into the causes of his death, allegedly due to a lightning strike.
Assam’s Minister of Forests Parimal Suklabaidya expressed his deep regret over the death of these animals. According to him, elephants reportedly died from lightning strikes in Kandali Proposed Reserve Forestin Nagaon district, during a thunderstorm on Wednesday night.
“It is very painful to see elephants die like this. But we have to wait for the report postmortem to know the exact cause“, he told the press from the scene of the events, some 150 kilometers southeast of GuwahatiThe state capital.
The Prime Minister of Assam, himanta biswa Sarmasaid in a statement that he was concerned about the death of “so many elephants.”
Forest officials and a local deputy, jitu Goswamialso stated a little earlier that the dead pachyderms were probably victims of lightning.
About 30,000 elephants live in India, about 60% of the wild elephant population of Asia.
