Kimberly Asenjo: A successful modeling career and her tireless fight against racism

Those experiences suffered during his childhood have helped him develop his career as an artist and deal with difficulties and cultural mandates. In fact, she is currently one of the greatest exponents of modeling, requested by recognized national and international brands.

“I am at the beginning of my career and I am very grateful. I worked and I work a lot. I had very good experiences and also very bad ones. I am getting down to pure effort, faith and desire, ”she shared in an exclusive interview with Todo Noticias.

He was patient and persevering, despite the gloomy panorama in which his days unfolded as a result of discrimination, kimberly I had a goal and I wasn’t going to give it up.

With courage and timidity he expressed the following to TN, an Argentine media outlet:

“It is very difficult to occupy a place as a black woman and a model in Argentina. Sometimes I come to a production and out of 100 people, 90 are white and the rest are non-white. We blacks have few spaces and we cannot be mediocre. We have to work twice as hard to get there. Everything costs us much more”

Coming from a family with Argentine and Brazilian roots, he received parental encouragement and constant support to make his dream come true. Modeling is not only her passion, but also hip hop rhythm in which she unfolds with plasticity and elegance.

“I feel that being a model is my revenge against racism. The black man has to fly to do what the white man does walking”, the young woman harshly emphasized.

RACISM ON THE CATWALK

On repeated occasions we have observed complaints led by models who were excluded due to their skin color, hair, height and body image. Although the catwalks declare themselves “more inclusive”, there is still no balance and sensible change of perspective, day by day there are thousands of victims of racism in fashion.

However, not all models get the same opportunities, many of them are set aside and left aside, they were silent for years, but today they are filled with courage and break the pact of silence. Should the choice be based on their physical aspects and not on their talent and authenticity?

There is a lack of plurality in the world of industry! Phrases like “too black” or “too white” are heard daily and increase humiliation and ridicule.

Extremist racism, xenophobia and intolerance guarantee discrimination in societies. In an environment of little diversity, corporations exert influence on ways of living and prejudices are increasing more and more.

How can it be that even in the 21st century we are rejected from job opportunities because of our ethnicity, traits, sexual condition or nationality?

Without going any further, let us recall the sayings of Ricky Martin In the midst of the problem of the murder of george floyd in USA during 2020.

“I am a threat to the United States because I am Latino, homosexual and married to an Arab man” and he added firmly: “You have to talk about love, you have to talk about love: it doesn’t matter who you love, it doesn’t matter where you come from, your stratum social and your skin color”.

This makes it clear that exclusion and homophobic acts do not distinguish social bias, they are present in everyday life. In some way, we are all victims and accomplices of our neighbor being considered different under socially instituted canons and stereotypes of beauty.

UNTIL WHEN WILL WE BE FUNCTIONAL TO THIS SYSTEM THAT REJECTS THE DIFFERENT?
