A company specializing in animal health technology has developed an application that uses a mobile device camera to assess a cat’s facial expressions and determine the pain the feline is feeling.
How does it work?
The application, called Tably, was developed by the Sylvester company, based in Calgary (Canada). To detect possible discomfort in cats, the app analyzes the position of the ears and head, as well as the twitching of the eyes, the tension of the muzzle and the changes in the whiskers.
“Helps cat owners to know if their pet is in pain or not”Sylvester’s Miche Priest was quoted as saying by Reuters. “We were able to train a machine with machine learning and a series of images,” she added.

A study published in 2019 in the journal Scientific Reports concluded that the technique known as the Feline Grimace Scale (FGS) is a valid and reliable tool for assessing a cat’s facial expressions and determining how much pain it is in.
For her part, Dr. Liz Ruelle, from a cat clinic in Calgary, where the Tably developers trained the algorithm, stressed that the application could be of great help to veterinarians with little experience or students of this specialty.
