Since 1973 Denmark has been in the top 5 of the Ranking of the happiest countries in the world. Almost 50 years!
How is it possible that the Danes are so happy?
Of course many factors come into play. But recently one of its secrets to enjoy life to the fullest has become popular, and it is called hygge.
What does that word mean and how to implement it in your life to be happier? Here we tell you.
Meaning of hygge
This Danish word does not have a literal translation into Spanish, but it refers, first of all, to comfort. But understood this as the pleasure that comes from enjoying the little things in life, being at ease in the place and moment in which one is, feeling in a welcoming climate.
All of that is hygge.
The Danes, then, have discovered that happiness is in those little things: sitting in front of the fireplace to drink tea, having a long after-dinner with loved ones after a delicious dinner, or taking a hot water bath.
A concept of winter?
In Denmark, of course, the winters are long and hostile. This implies that the Danes must spend many months without going out too much, and with a climate that is not favorable to them. However, they have been at the peak of happiness for years.
Hygge seems, then, to be related to winter. Watch a series hugging your partner, sleep with soft blankets or have a hot coffee in the morning. Sounds good, doesn’t it?
But even if you were born in winter, that does not mean that in warm cities you cannot live in hygge mode. Drinking a juice with your bare feet on the grass, letting the evening sun caress your skin while you take your love by the hand, letting the sea foam tickle you: that is also hygge.
hygge is for everyone
Perhaps here you are thinking that this is a very middle-class concept, but in Denmark everyone, regardless of the social class they belong to, knows and practices this philosophy of life.
It is true that practicing hygge is within the reach of anyone: it is mainly a question of attitude, since the idea is precisely not to focus so much on luxury as to enjoy the details.
Sharing a plate of food with loved ones, for example, falls under this philosophy whether it is a soup or a sushi roll.
The only thing you have to do to implement hygge in your life is to allocate some time every day to be comfortable, if possible with your loved ones but you can also do it alone.
Prepare everything: music, something delicious to eat, your favorite infusion, decorate the space a bit. And dedicate yourself to enjoying the pleasure of being there at that moment.
