Huawei P40 and P40 Pro: Smartphones for photographers

If you are a fan of mobile photography, today I am going to talk to you about Huawei P40 and its Pro version Huawei P40 Protwo high-end mobile phones with 5G technology, with powerful and very competitive processors, which continue to bet heavily on design and the photograph at their terminals.

Although before continuing, I would like to recommend this mega guide on mobile photography with all the tips and tricks so you can get the most out of your phone’s camera, whatever it is.

And if you want to compare and learn more about other mid-high range mobile phone models, take a look at what we consider to be the best mobile phones today.

Returning to our topic today, it is important to know that these terminals they do not come with built-in Google services. The Huawei P40 and P40 Pro present an EMUI interface which means that you will not be able to access Google Play applications, nor those of Google, such as Google Photos, Gmail, etc.

However, Huawei has its own AppGallery application gallery with a good number of them, also allowing you to access the most widespread ones (such as Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram, etc).

Keep reading that we will see both models more thoroughly.

General characteristics of the Huawei P40

It is a mid-range phone but high-end as far as photography is concerned. It has a very careful design, with a matte glass finish on the back and an overflowing screen on the front.

This mobile phone stands out for its compact size and light weight. With dimensions of 148.5 x 71.1 mm and 175g of weight, it is an easy mobile to carry in your hand or in your pocket.

In addition, it has a very powerful and fast processor such as the Kirin 990a screen curved at the edges that occupies almost the entire front, is resistant to dust and splashes, and offers facial or fingerprint unlocking.

But, without a doubt, what stands out the most (and surely what interests you the most), is his behavior in the field of the photograph.

The Huawei P40 bets, and strongly, on mobile photography. With its 5 Leica cameras, 3 on the back (a 50 MP ultra vision, a 16 MP ultra wide angle and an 8 MP telephoto) and two on the front (one with Artificial Intelligence and the other for selfies), This Smartphone has a spectacular performance.

General characteristics of the Huawei P40 Pro

The older brother of the Huawei P40 is its Pro version. If the Huawei pro 40 was a real “candy” for photographers, this is a real madness.

The Huawei P40 Pro comes equipped with the same Kirin 990 5G processor latest generation than its P40 version, but faster thanks to the 90 Hz refresh rate (versus the 60 Hz of the non-Pro version).

Its design offers a ultra sharp screen with rounded edges and a matte glass finish on the back where the 3 cameras of this Smartphone are located (+ 1 3D depth detection camera to create Bokeh). On the front, it comes equipped with a 32Mp camera with f/2.2 aperture and an AI depth camera.

Its cameras are accompanied by Artificial Intelligence to analyze environments and people, and recognize the characteristics of posture and expression. It also allows you to take a 4K motion picture and then the gallery editing feature recommends the best motion moment. AI also allows you to eliminate reflections or bystanders.

The Pro version features higher battery performance than its simple version, fingerprint and face unlock, and a 1/1.28-inch sensor with a 2.44Ξm pixel size.

Regarding the cameras, some of the features that have surprised me the most are:

  • The 40 MP (f/1.8) professional ultra-wide-angle film camera allows you to record high-resolution 4K videos at 60 fps with the rear and front cameras.
  • The main “Ultra Vision” camera has no less than 50 MP and an f/1.9 aperture and image stabilizer.
  • The telephoto camera allows magnifications of up to 5x Optical Zoom, 10x Hybrid Zoom, and 50x Maximum Zoom. It has an aperture of f/3.4.
  • It allows recording in Time Lapse mode in 4K.
  • It allows you to record video with ultra slow motion at 7,680 fps.
  • The two rear cameras allow you to see a general scene and focus on the central part at the same time: the Dual View Video.

We will see them in detail in the specifications.
