How to make modular wooden seats

Following a series of simple steps you can create these modular seats. In them you will find a highly functional solution. You can create as many as you need and modify their layout as many times as you want. Each cube can be transformed into a stool, an ottoman, a coffee table or part of an armchair.

– 8 boards of 2.5 x 10 x 20 cm of pine wood (subtract three if you will not make backings)
– 2 boards of 5 x 7.5 x 20 cm of pine wood
– 20 screws for 6 cm pocket hole coupling
– A handful of 6 cm wood screws
– A handful of headless nails
– Carpenter’s glue
– Choice of finish

Instructions

1. Assemble the frame for the seat using carpenter’s glue and hole-pocket coupling screws. Glue each joint well. The frame support should be in the middle.

2. Add the legs with screws for hole-pocket coupling.

3. Attach the side slats with wood glue and brad nails. These boards are the same length as the long sides of the frame. As you lay them out, leave a one-centimeter gap on each one, starting at the top.

4. Rotate the frame and add the slats on the other two sides. Leave the same space between each of them.

5. Place the seat slats leaving a gap of 2 cm between each one. If you don’t want your seats to have backs, you’re done at this step.

6. If you want a backrest: Using a drill, mark the holes into which you will screw the brackets for the backrest. Make sure they are well aligned with the last strip. Finally, add them to the longest sides.

To make the backing of the cubes that you will place in the corners, you will need two additional strips:

7. Nail backing slats to finish. Sand and give it the finish you like best.
