How to make a pot for climbing plants

Climbing plants or vines are very beautiful and ideal for all types of gardens: both for those who have little space and need to take advantage of the walls for the plants to grow, and for large parks where shade is needed, where they can be placed in pergolas forming a roof.

In this note you will learn how to put together a pot for climbing plants that you can have in your patio, or even on a balcony, and that you can also use in a larger garden, as a hedge that gives you privacy or simply as a decorative element.

Cedar wood pieces:

– 2 beams of 5/4×6″ (Cedar legs)

– One 5/4×6″ top frame (Cedar trim)

– 4 planks of 1×6″ and 3 of 1×3″ (Cedar slat)

– 16 boards of 2×2″ (Cedar picket)

– One 1×3 bottom frame (cedar cap trim)

Other materials:

– Thick screws, nuts and nails.

– 4 wheels and their supports to place them

– Varnish suitable for cedar wood.

– A wooden planter or the material you want already built. If you want to do it yourself, cut all the pieces you see in the graphic, or follow this guide to build a crate with wood.

Process

1. Prepare the wood. Cut all the pieces if you have not already got them to the necessary size, and sand them very well. These instructions are to carry out the project with cedar wood, but in reality you can do it with the one you prefer, even recycling, for example, pallets.

2. If you are going to build the box or planter yourself, do so before assembling the upper structure. If you already have it, go to the next step.

3. Join the top frame, the sides and the bottom frame of your structure, screwing each piece carefully, and joining them in turn to the drawer. This way you will have the mother structure.

4. With the help of nails, and following the diagram, build the fence through which the vine will climb when it grows. In this case, it is a series of 7 horizontal planks, some thicker and some thinner, supported by 16 2×2″ rods, eight at the front and eight at the back. You can also make other designs, like the one in the first photo , in the form of rhombuses.

5. Once you have built both the frame and the internal grille, screw them together, and attach them to the drawer.

6. Put wheels under the planter, so you can move it.

7. Varnish it to give it a nice finish.

The finished model will look like the following (you can also see a narrower model):

Below you can see a video that explains the procedure in detail:

These models, of course, are not the only ones you can build. You can try different sizes, materials, and styles, and place different types of plants on them.

You can try traditional ivy vines, venture into wilder looking plants like violets, or create a romantic hanging wisteria ceiling in your garden.

Go ahead and play with your imagination!
