How to make a bed for your garden, patio or terrace

Enjoying the outdoors is one of the most rewarding experiences there is. Breathing fresh air, reading in the sun or simply resting in contact with nature are unique moments; even more so if you can do them in the privacy of your home.

To make the most of those moments you can learn how to build your own bed to place in your garden, terrace, or patio, and thus make the moment of rest, a true before and after in your day.

In addition, you will be creating an original design piece to decorate your patios and gardens, with your own personal stamp. Dare to undertake this project and surprise yourself with what you are capable of doing with your own hands!

– Woods:

a) Lateral modules: 4 boards for the lateral measurement, and 6 smaller ones for its ends and central support

b) Central modules: 6 tables; and 9 smaller ones for its ends and central support

c) A chipboard sheet for the upper base

d) Two planks of more solid wood to cover the sides of the modules

– Nail gun

– Measuring tape

– wadding

– A fabric to create the cover

– Wood glue

– Son and sewing needle

– Staple Gun

Process

1. First you must calculate the size you want your garden bed to be. It is preferable that you choose to place it in a corner, since it will allow you to create a backrest to use it as an armchair and, at the same time, you will be making the most of the space you have.

2. Then you must start making the base. This one that you can see here has been built from five modules of wooden boards. For that you must cut for each one -according to the measure that fits the dimensions of the place where you will place it-, wood both for its sides, as for its ends and central support, as you can see in the photograph.

Note: remember that when cutting and forming the three central modules you must subtract the width of the side modules from the total width you have calculated.

3. Use a nail gun to attach each individual module, and all five to each other. In this case, it has also been screwed to the deck to achieve a more resistant base.

4. Then, with two planks of more solid wood cut in relation to the measurements of your bed, cover the sides and screw them from the inside. You can leave the wood like this, or paint it the color you like best.

Note: the deck can also be cheaply created yourself, with pallets!

5. Once you have your base ready, measure the inside and cut a piece of chipboard to fit it. Adhere it with glue.

6. To create the mattress for your bed, take a piece of foam rubber as tall as you like, place it on your base, measure it and cut it. If you don’t have the perfect size, don’t worry! You can combine various parts until you reach the dimensions, and then glue them together. When you cover it, it will not be noticeable at all.

7. Cover your foam rubber with a layer of wadding, stapling the joints. This will make the surface more comfortable.

8. Choose a fabric that you like, take the measurements, cut it and sew the joints to form a cover for your mattress that can be removed for washing. You can also use a sheet or blanket that you already have in your home. It is preferable that you choose a resistant fabric if your bed will be outside.

9. Place the finished mattress on the wooden surface of the bed and cover it on top with the cover, hiding the ends below.

And ready! Relax in your own bed! You can add some cushions you want to make a backrest and use it as an armchair as well.
