How to lock your iPhone with a password and make it “virtually impenetrable” to strangers – from the phone or remotely, if it’s lost or stolen

If you do not have a password enabled on your phone, You are missing out on a fantastic way to virtually impenetrable protect your smartphone from any stranger gaining access to your phone if it is stolen.. And keeps your phone away from prying eyes.

If you enable password lock, you’ll also want to adjust the time after which the lock activates. You can choose from 30 seconds to 5 minutes.

How to lock your iPhone using a password

1. Open settings.

2. Depending on your model, tap “Face ID & Passcode” (for iPhone X or later), “Touch ID & Passcode” (for iPhone 5s and later), or “Passcode” (for iPhone 5 or older models).

3. Tap “Set up a passcode.”

4. Enter a six-digit password that you’ll need to log in whenever you want to unlock your phone. If you don’t want a six-digit password, tap “Password Options” and choose the type of password you want: alphanumeric, four-digit, or any number of digits you want.

5. Confirm the password by entering it a second time on the verification screen.

6. Your iPhone will still ask you for your Apple ID password. This will allow you to use your new password instead of the ID for some actions.

Your phone will now have a password assigned to it, meaning it will automatically lock after a few minutes or when you press the Power button. If it is locked, it will need the password to become operational again.

Change the auto-lock setting

1. Open settings

2. Tap “Display & brightness.”

3. Tap “Auto Lock” and choose a time that can range from 30 seconds to 5 minutes.

How to lock your phone by starting Lost Mode

No one expects to lose a phone, but it does happen sometimes. The good news is that Apple offers a tool to lock your phone and help you get it back. When you put it in Lost Mode, your phone will automatically lock itself – even if you never set a password – but it can only do so if it has battery or signal. The lock screen will also offer a message of your choice where you can enter a phone number to call.

1. In any browser, open Find My iPhone.

2. Sign in with your Apple ID.

3. When the map appears, tap on the device and select your lost iPhone.

4. In the box that appears, click on “Lost Mode.”

5. Enter a phone number that will appear on the locked screen of the lost phone, so that if it is found, you can be notified. Then click “Next.”

6. Enter the message you want to appear on the lock screen or accept the default message. Click “OK”.

7. Your phone is remotely locked (assuming it’s in range of any WiFi network).

If you have recovered your phone, you can return to the page to turn off “Lost Mode”. You will need to confirm this a few times.
