Having your own garden is always fun and rewarding, even if you start with just one or two varieties in a pot.
If you don’t have much space, you can try alternatives like growing plants that only grow back in water, or even dare to grow mushrooms at home!
To add to your small garden, this idea is very original: you can learn how to plant tomatoes that grow upside down!
The tomato is a bushy plant that can grow straight, semi-straight or creeping. Therefore, there is no problem in making it grow hanging and facing downwards.
The ideal time to sow it is spring, since it needs heat to germinate. Its cycle is annual, that is to say that we will harvest once a year. If we will have them indoors or in a greenhouse, we can try planting them before.
In this case, we will transplant a plant that has already started to grow, so the time will not be so important.
– An empty two-liter bottle
– Fertile land
– A coffee filter
– Scissors
– Wire and tweezers
– Wooden rod or brochette stick
– A small tomato plant, ready to transplant
Process
1. First of all, you should get an empty two-liter bottle and wash it very well.
2. Then, cut its base as you can see in the image, separating it into two parts.
3. Invert the bottom of the bottle and test that it fits snugly on top.
4. With a hot screw or similar, make a hole in both parts at the same time (guide by the photo).
5. Pierce the base of the bottle with the screw, so that later you can water through it and the water falls drop by drop.
6. Once you have both parts of the bottle ready, separate them and set them aside.
7. Carefully remove your plant or seedling from the pot in which you had it, leaving the soil that covers its roots.
8. Pass the entire plant through the coffee filter, through the hole. Wrap only the part of soil that covers the roots.
9. Very carefully, place the plant upside down, inside the bottle, passing it through the spout. Be very careful not to damage it.
10. Invert the bottle, place the perforated base on the free part, and join the pieces through a wooden rod.
11. Secure the planter with a wire tied to the rod, and hang it wherever you want!
The tomato needs a lot of sun to grow. Place the plant near a window, or better yet, outdoors! To water them, simply fill the top bowl of your hanging planter, and the water will trickle down one drop at a time.
If you want it to be more aesthetic, you can cover the bottle with a canvas or cloth, or with whatever you like. Another inverted planting system allows flowering plants to be placed at the top of the pot.
You can adapt it as you like!
