The cherry tree is a very nice tree, not only because of the fruit but because of its pretty white and pink flowers. It grows magnificently in Japan, and tolerates cold climates very well.
Both the flowers and the fruits are reason enough to have one at home. But cherry trees can get very large, so it can be difficult to keep them in the garden.
Also, you may not have enough space to plant it, but, in that case, the solution may be to plant them in a pot!
Cheer up to have a cherry tree in your house!
How to plant a potted cherry tree
1. Wash the seeds well to remove all the pulp.
2. To speed up germination, “scarify” the pits, that is, rub them gently on a rough surface.
3. Place all the bones you have in a plastic container with a damp paper in the refrigerator (it is a tree of cold areas).
4. When you see that it germinates, plant the seeds in the pot. Prepare it taking into account the following cherry tree needs:
- Cherries need plenty of sunlight and good air circulation. They prefer a fertile and sandy soil, with good drainage and a slightly acidic pH.
- The cherry seedling needs space for its taproot. Therefore, if you plant it in a container, this space should be at least 8 inches (20 cm) deep.
- Plant the seeds less than 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep. To do this, make a hole with your finger up to the first knuckle and place a cherry seed in it.
necessary care
Once your potted cherry tree begins to grow, you will have to take into account that it will need some specific care:
- Water only once the soil is almost dry. Young cherries can’t stand soggy soil, but they can’t stay dry for long either.
- Fertilize the trees with compost each year in early spring.
- Pay special attention to pests, because cherries are very vulnerable to them.
- Prune the cherry tree a bit as it grows to encourage fruit production.
- Keep in mind that the cherry tree will take up to 5 years to bear fruit (unless you graft from a more mature plant).
- For the cherry tree to bear fruit, the flowers need to be pollinated. If there are no cherry trees near where you live, you will need to have several plants and bees nearby.
