How much does it cost to stay in Japan?

About 100 USD per night in Japan will be more than enough if you are looking for a well-located and rated hotel for 2 people. However, I managed to get it for less. On average I paid 83 USD per night, for 13 days it was 1090 USD for 2 people. Per person we would talk about 545 USD of accommodation.

My hotels in Japan

  • Kyoto – Kyoto Bettei Hotel Menu: a few steps from the Kyoto Museum and the Kyoto Imperial Palace. There is a metro station 5 minutes walk away. The accommodation is highly recommended. The cost per night for a room for 2 people was 70 USD. More information and reservation here.
  • Osaka – S-peria Inn Osaka Hommachi: A very clean, comfortable hotel with everything ideal for a good rest. Located just 2 subway stations from Osaka Castle. The cost per night for a room for 2 people was 70 USD. More information and reservation here.
  • Tokyo: I chose a hotel in the Asakusa area, in fact, next to its famous temple and just a 5-minute walk from a subway station. It’s called Super Hotel Asakusa and I consider it one of those little gems that you find with luck: good location, buffet breakfast included, very clean and even a free bar every night for guests (yes, wines, beers and cocktails at no extra cost). The cost for rooms for 2 people is on average 100 USD (I got it for 80 USD). An excellent quality-price ratio in the center of Tokyo. Details and reservation here.

How much does it cost to eat in Japan?

Eating in Japan can be very expensive, but it can also be cheap. So regardless of your budget you will find options. In local restaurants there are menus over a thousand yen, about 7.5 USD. These are simple complete meals but with typical foods, from sushi to meat dishes. For breakfast about 5 USD may be enough and for dinner the same amount of food if you go to local restaurants or at least 15 USD if you are looking for something more fit.

If these prices seem high to you, there is the option of supermarket prepared food dishes for about 700 yen / 5 USD or fast food alternatives from 500 yen / 4 USD.

For an average budget where you combine everything, 30 USD a day may be enough. In total 420 USD.

How much does transportation cost in Japan?

Transportation in Japan is considered expensive, however, travelers have the option of purchasing the Japan Rail Pass. This is a transportation pass that allows you unlimited use of transportation operated by JR for a certain time. You can learn more about the JR Pass here.

For 14-day trips, the cost of the Japan Rail Pass purchased directly from their offices or the official website costs: 52,960 YEN / 376 USD.

To this it would be necessary to add about 5 USD per day of transportation (this amount will vary depending on where you are staying), since JR does not cover all routes and sometimes you will use others.

For 14 days it would be about 10 thousand yen, 72 USD extra, in total we are talking about a transportation cost of 448 USD.
