Hope in Esteros de Iberá: flowers grow among ashes

Approximately 11% of the territory of the province was consumed by the fire that devastated a territory rich in ecosystems and biodiversity, fundamental in the preservation of the life of the species. Here it is worth reflecting on how human action mercilessly damages and destroys nature, only for economic and corporate purposes.

“Life finds its way! The fire has been gone for only a couple of days and everything is full of flowers”, the coordinator of the Iberá Project of Rewilding Argentina told the newspaper El Litoral, from the Rincón del Socorro ranch.

According to statements provided by the foundation that has its work to reverse the crisis of species extinction rewildingestimate that flowers bloomed on about 500 of the 9,500 hectares devastated by the fire in the National Park.

“I expected to see all black and found an incredible beauty”expressed Sofía Heinonen, executive director of the organizationbased on an exhaustive tour of the areas of the Iberá Wetlands National Park affected by the fires in currents.

BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS CONVEY THE MEANING OF LIFE

While making a tour of the Argentine territory, he found buds of bulb flowers among the ashes. Also called rain lilies, or Zephyranthes full of beauty, color and joy in the midst of a bleak panorama.

This is how Heinonen revealed the news to La Nación: “Among this enormous biodiversity, just as there were highly affected species, others were also benefited by the conditions of lack of competition and drought with a little humidity after the rain. These bulb flowers took advantage of these little windows of opportunity that nature provides and flourished in the high hill areas. The highest and driest parts of the land are completely covered by these flowers.”

THE FIRES DO NOT END, BUT THE MIRACLES OF NATURE ARE PRESENT

An opportunity in the midst of disaster occurs when life is reborn and takes revenge for the environmental catastrophe. It seems that Mother Earth renews herself and through her enormous capacity to rebuild herself, opens the way to a new beginning.

Although we know that the damage is irreparable, the flowers begin to sprout little by little. The rains allowed the fires to be reduced by up to 80% and while the fauna is rebuilding little by little.

Needless to say, the fires caused in the region of northeastern Argentina have killed numerous species, affecting, to mention a few, aquatic vegetation, native forests and pine and eucalyptus plantations.

However, there is a fundamental factor: human intervention will be key to collaborating with a rapid restoration in ecosystems. The soils, flora and fauna and native species are the main victims, including capybaras, alligators and amphibian animals native to the area.

Nature continues to send us messages that it is possible to be reborn and start over, but it will only be feasible if the human being commits to preserve it and respect it accordingly so as not to damage it without measuring the environmental consequences that will inevitably punish us all.

WHY DO WE NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT NATURE EXPRESSES TO US?
