oh! As I see that you like the topic, I can’t help but recommend this mega guide that we have prepared on portrait photography. In it I tell you tricks, tips, inspiration and much more than you can imagine.
Let’s continue where we were going. When we buy a SLR camera for the first time, we are normally beginning a long and arduous path of learning that will take time, but there are certain tricks that are easy to follow and with which we can obtain surprising immediate results, like today’s trick.
Today’s (hyper-easy) exercise is called “Depth of Field”. I don’t want to go into technical details, but I’m simply going to give you the exact steps you have to follow to achieve this effect without losing sight of our main goal: easy portraits. The goal is to get a portrait (or photo of any subject, that’s also fine) in which the subject comes out of focus, very, very sharp, while the background is out of focus.
This technique is very common among professional photographers when they take portraits or photographs in which they want to enhance the value of an object. Having the subject VERY in focus and the background behind it very out of focus makes the viewer’s gaze go directly to the subject, giving it all the attention and prominence.
6 steps to easy and impressive portraits
- Do you know how to handle the Aperture Priority? If so, go to step 2, otherwise read on.
- To control Aperture Priority mode: Simply on the mode dial of your camera choose the following mode:
- If you have Nikon choose mode “A”.
- If you have Canyon choose βAvβ mode.
- For Sony it would be the “A” mode.
- The cameras Pentax they have it as βAvβ.
- To control Aperture Priority mode: Simply on the mode dial of your camera choose the following mode:
- Once you have the correct mode selected turn the control dial (The control dial is another button, don’t know where it is? Very easy, click on your camera brand and I’ll show you right now: Nikon; Canon; Sony and Pentax).
- If in step 1 you have correctly selected A (or Av) mode, now as you turn the control dial you will see a number change on your camera screen, with the f/ symbol. do you follow me Well, that value please reduce it to the maximum. It will stay at about f/5.6, maybe f/3.5 or thereabouts, the important thing is that you turn the control dial until the f/ value can’t go any lower.
- Now turn up the focal length of your lens to the maximum. If you have an 18-55mm lens set it to 55, if it’s 55-200mm set it to 200.
- focus Ask a friend, your wife, your nephew or your grandmother, ask them to give you a small smile and⦠shoot.
- This step is the most important: APPLY THIS TUTORIAL. Yes, that’s right, it’s no use reading this far if you don’t apply it in the end. You’ve already seen how easy it is, so please don’t let it get cold. Practice right now.
- Remember that it is only when we practice something that it sticks with us.
- Enjoy.
Obviously, achieving very good easy portraits requires that we take care of several aspects that I will surely explain to you on future occasions, but today’s trick has been a pleasant and easy trick to achieve that I wanted to tell you quickly.
I hope you enjoy it. Also, if you just got your first SLR camera then congratulations! This will have been one of your first forays into the manual mode, which I will explain to you in future articles and thanks to which you will be achieving authentic wonders.
That said, enjoy the tutorial. Oh, and as always, if you know someone with a SLR camera who could find this useful, I beg you to recommend it π
