Extremely Simple Trick To Get Spectacular Panoramic Views (With Examples) [Actualizado]

Before the digital era, panoramic photography was reserved for a few enthusiasts with specific cameras to work in this format. Today, anyone with a digital camera and access to a computer, or even anyone with a Smartphone, is capable of taking panoramic photos easily and quickly. It may never have occurred to you to try panoramic photography. In that case, I would recommend that before starting you take a look at this very complete guide that we have prepared for you to learn step by step how to achieve spectacular panoramas, regardless of the camera you have.

As a photographer, the more tools you have at your disposal, the more adaptable to each situation you will be and the richer your images, so if you have not yet “dare” with panoramic photography, I recommend that you immerse yourself in it. Not only is it very easy to practice, but it leaves you with images that you cannot get in any other way.

Butโ€ฆ what is a panoramic photograph?

A panoramic photo is a photo that covers a larger portion of the scene. It includes a much greater viewing angle than other types of more common formats. With panoramas you can convey the immensity of the landscape and introduce elements into the frame that you could not include in any other way. Here’s an example:

The trick

And what is that trick that I promised you in the title? Let’s go there. Most panoramic images are like the one we have seen before and how we usually take most of our photos; horizontally. But the truth is that if you use the portrait format combined with panoramic photography it will give you amazing and unique images that would be impossible to obtain otherwise. Like the following:

Here are a few ideas (with tips) for you to take a look at and see what I mean.

Architecture

Panoramic photography is nothing more than the union of several correlative and overlapping images so that they show a single elongated image. Normally we think of landscapes, but the truth is that the possibilities of verticals are impressive. Architecture is one of the most recurrent motifs in panoramic photography, since it allows an approach to buildings without missing any of its parts.

The vertical panoramas for interiors and exteriors, they allow you closeness and detail without losing part of the frame, without giving up the complete image. neither will you have distortions typical of optics such as the wide angle or the fisheye, which are the ones that provide us with a greater image angle, but at the same time some or a lot of distortion, especially at the edges of the image.

The best thing to do to obtain panoramic images of any kind is to do it with a tripodespecially indoors where, in addition to the problem of maintaining the frame, you have the lack of light, although it is not always essential.

When you photograph cities from above, and you want to give a sensation of height and depth, do not forget to take some images to mount your panorama later. The ideal is to frame horizontal and go taking the images from top to bottom and in case of doubt take several. You are always in time to delete them later.

When taking panoramic images do not forget that these must overlap partly so that the program you are going to use recognizes the areas where the images join. There are those who recommend that 10% of the image should be repeated, but I have read up to 20 or 25%. As always, it’s a matter of practice ๐Ÿ™‚

Scenery

Despite the fact that in landscapes the most typical is the horizontal format, you should not stop trying the vertical formats. We normally use them to give leadership to heaven because it is a protagonist in itself, but at the same time we want to give it proportion and context. Or on the contrary, we want to give prominence to an elongated element (for example a tree) or from which you want its vertical path (for example a river). Here are a few examples:

In the previous example, if we do not put the sky in context, we would not get an idea of โ€‹โ€‹its immensity. Instead, by adding elements like the mountain, we contextualize and proportionate the amount of sky we are referring to in the image.

The vertical format allows us to include all the proportion of sky that we want while still giving leadership also to the lower form of the image.

To obtain both vertical and horizontal panoramic images without distortion, remember to use optics with a distance between 35mm and 50mm.

How else could you get the image above if not with a panoramic image?

Framing vertically allows you to follow a vertical path, such as a waterfall, a river, a path, etc.

Contextualize the images

Sometimes in life we โ€‹โ€‹have no choice but to choose between two or more options that we like. Photography, unfortunately, is no different. Have you ever found yourself in the position of choosing between an incredible sky and an equally incredible earthly frame?

You think, “I love this street scene, I love it high up with these clouds, with this magnificent skyโ€ฆ”, but the sad reality is that this framing is only possible in your head because it doesn’t fit on your sensor ;-). Well, that is solvable with vertical panoramic photography. Who said you couldn’t have it all? ๐Ÿ˜‰

What do you think? Haven’t you gotten the bug to try panoramic photography in general and vertical panorama in particular? Well, I’ll confess something to you; Me ;-).

The truth is that the horizontal has me hooked for a long time, but in vertical panoramas it costs me more fall or think about the possibility and opportunity to take some, although if you give a little free rein to the imagination, you don’t even need big buildings or landscapes, and if you don’t look at the following verticals that are from a man’s path from home to his worked. Who doesn’t practice is because he doesn’t want to ๐Ÿ˜‰.

And to finish, I leave you with this tutorial by Alejandro Mallado where he explains how you can mount a vertical panorama in Lightroom:

I hope you liked it and encouraged you to practice with panoramic photography. If so, it would be great if you shared it on your favorite social network (Twitter, Facebook or Google+) Thank you very much and until next time! ๐Ÿ™‚
