ESO 2nd year – The beginning of the Middle Ages: Byzantium, Islam, Carolingian Empire –

Weeks ago from Sobrehistoria we have brought a special for 1st ESO students with articles on all the topics of that year. Now it’s time to dedicate ourselves to the syllabus of 2nd year ESO of History (Social Sciences). To better organize the information we have divided it into different units, we will now start with the unit we have called “The beginning of the Middle Ages”

By the beginning of the Middle Ages, we understand the first centuries of this historical period: from the end of the 5th century to the beginning of the 9th century. This stage is also known as the Early Middle Ages.

Its main characteristic is the fragmentation of the Mediterranean world after the fall of the Western Roman Empire (473 AD). Three great cultural spaces are formed: Byzantium (Western Roman Empire), Islam and Western Europe where the Roman-Germanic Kingdoms arise and -later- the Carolingian Empire.
