How can I stay connected to the Internet during my trip abroad? It is one of the most frequent questions that I receive on my social networks and here is the answer. I use the Holafly eSIM, which has the advantage of allowing you to be connected from the moment you land, without having to present your passport or carry out extra procedures when you arrive at your destination. But how does it work? How do I activate it?
In this article I explain everything you need to know about eSIMs and how to use them on all your trips.
What is an eSIM or virtual SIM?
Let’s start with what an eSIM or embedded SIM is. Basically it is a much more modern option to traditional physical SIM cards that are inserted into the phone. The eSIM chip is located inside your cell phone (or any other compatible device), so you don’t have to put a physical card in any slot. That is why they are called eSIM, not by electronic SIM, but by the term “embedded SIM” (eSIM), which means integrated SIM card.

How does Holafly’s international eSIM work?
eSIMs are a technology that allows you to connect to the Internet through an internal chip in smartphones. And this process is much easier than it sounds.
If you are interested in a Holafly eSIM, here I explain the step by step for its purchase, download, installation and activation:
- Enter the Holafly eSIMs website here.
- Choose the destination or destinations where you need to have data. It can be a single destination or an area, for example, the eSIM Europe plan covers more than 25 countries on the continent, including Spain, the United Kingdom and France; which also now includes calls. While the eSIM North America plan covers the United States, Canada and Mexico; which now includes unlimited data and the option to share data. For its part, the eSIM Asia plan covers South Korea, Japan, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Hong Kong, Macau and Laos.
- Select how many days your trip is for.
- Apply the code “” to receive a discount on your purchase.
- Wait for the purchase confirmation in your email. This will arrive with the QR code necessary to activate the product.
- Connect your cell phone to a WiFi network (it will be needed to download the eSIM profile). Scan the QR code with your mobile phone and activate the SIM card.
- In order to start using it, you need to go to Settings, Connections and look for the SIM Card Management option and choose the Holafly eSIM instead of your local SIM to use mobile data.
- For your eSIM to get better coverage, you must leave the “Mobile roaming” or “Roaming” option activated. Using this option does not entail any surcharge for you as long as you have the Holafly eSIM configured for your mobile data.
Can I use the Holafly eSIM on any cell phone?
eSIM technology is not compatible with all devices. Holafly works on more than 30 types of phones from Apple, Google, Huawei and Samsung. This includes Apple iPhone SE (2020), XR, XS, 12 Mini, Samsung S20, Galaxy Z Flip, Note 20 Ultra, Fold LTE, Huawei P40 and Motorola Razr 2019. Some iPad models are also supported. I share the list of all compatible devices here.
My recommendation is that before buying it, check if your phone already has this technology. It is also important that you verify that your cell phone is unlocked. This means that a device can use any chip or SIM card, that is, from any company and in any region of the world. Sometimes they are not released when you have a contract with a telephone company.
If my phone doesn’t work with eSIM, what options do I have?
If your phone is unlocked but does not have eSIM technology, you have the option of arriving and purchasing a physical SIM for your phone at your destination. In many airports around the world you will find phone stores or stores focused on travelers where you can buy an internet and phone plan upon arrival. Or if you prefer, you can wait until you get to the cities to look for a store, this second option is usually much cheaper.
In case you purchase the Holafly eSIM and your device is not compatible, the Holafly team has 24/7 service and their refund policy fully understands this case and you can request a refund. To confirm this information, I recommend that you contact them depending on your case, and they will give you the correct advice.
In which countries can I use the eSIM?
The Holafly eSIM works in more than 160 countries around the world, with more than 60 destinations with unlimited data. Some of them are:
- Countries of the European Union such as Spain, France or Italy.
- Other European countries such as the United Kingdom or Russia.
- North American countries such as Mexico, the United States and Canada.
- Asian countries such as South Korea, Japan, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Hong Kong, Macao and Laos.
You can see all the available plans here and don’t forget to use the code “” to receive a 5% discount.
When changing countries do I need to activate it again?
If you subscribe to a plan that covers multiple countries, the eSIM will automatically continue to work in your new destination. I traveled through Spain, Belgium and Holland on my last trip with the European eSIM plan and I only activated it upon arrival at my first destination. Of course, consider that the days of your plan start counting from the moment you activate your eSIM, by scanning the QR code on your phone. Therefore, I recommend doing it when you arrive at your first destination and not before.
What internet speed does it include?
In most cases your Holafly eSIM offers maximum speed coverage (4G LTE) like any local data line. However, keep in mind that in areas with poor coverage your mobile phone could connect at lower speeds.
Advantages of the Holafly eSIM
- Since it is not a physical SIM, you can keep the SIM of your local phone to continue receiving calls or accessing services that require it such as electronic banking (in the case of countries like Mexico).
- You don’t lose your WhatsApp number. You can call and send messages to your WhatsApp contacts as if you were in your country.
- You don’t lose contact with family and friends. To keep your number on WhatsApp you don’t need to configure anything.
- There are plans from 5 days for short trips and up to 90 days.
- Delivery is immediate. If you are already traveling, you can make the purchase and the eSIM will be sent immediately after the purchase via email, so you can connect in a few seconds.
- You have customer service included in Spanish 24 hours a day through WhatsApp or its website, even if you travel to Japan, China or the USA.
- For your purchase you do not need to register or present your passport.
Can I make calls with the eSIM?
In some destinations such as the United States and Europe you have 60 minutes of outgoing calls and 60 minutes of incoming calls with your Holafly eSIM. For other destinations, calls can only be made through VOIP applications such as WhatsApp or Skype, which precisely use your data plan.
If I need more internet or more days, can I extend my plan?
Holafly has the option to expand your data plan before the available gigabytes for the destination you visit run out, this for a lower price. There you can also get the discount using the code “”.
⚠️It is mandatory to travel with insurance
Insurance is an essential requirement to travel to many countries in the world such as those in the Schengen Area. You can get it from 20 USD and if you use my code you receive 20% discount. Get an insurance quote here.
