“I start writing this thinking that I should make an appointment to wax. I leave the sugar to Cleopatra.” Thus ends Abigaíl Campos’s anecdote for El País where he mentions his experience with this new, but at the same time, ancient hair removal method called sugaring. She is that window of the internet that many of us have been at home, those of us who see a relatively simple recipe and, fascinated, try to replicate it, but we fail miserably.
Despite that, Abigail’s personal experience is another reason to try this method. It may have failed, but it showed that it is not a great science and that it can be tried without wasting time.
Although beauty standards appear to be recent impositions or at least a few centuries old, the truth is that they have been around for thousands of years. The depilatory method of sugaring dates back thousands of years, when the Egyptians lived their splendor and the pharaohs were considered descendants of the gods.
That culture that provided some of the foundations of culture worldwide made sugaring such an efficient practice that today it begins to be a natural homemade proposal against an entire beauty industry.
How to apply the sugarin technique?
You need:
- 2 cups of sugar
- Juice of a yellow lemon
- Water (in case lemon juice isn’t enough)
Preparation
We must put the lemon juice and the two cups of sugar in a casserole. It’s important that the juice completely cover the sugar, if it doesn’t that’s when you pour in a little water.
It should be heated over medium heat and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Then you have to lower the flame and wait until you finish a thick, but malleable substance of a soft golden color, as if it were a type of honey.
App
The substance must be allowed to come to room temperature before using a spatula to put it against the direction in which the hair grows. If you think that it does not adhere too much to the skin, you can put a little talcum powder to help it hold.
Being well applied, it should be pulled in the direction of hair growth, that is, the opposite direction to the one in which it was applied. Don’t forget to moisturize your skin at the end.
It’s organic, cheap, and easy to achieve, but it may take a bit of practice to perfect the substance before you’re left with that thick, golden paste.
