Eating the skin of the banana, could it supplant the meat?

Although it is usually recommended to reduce or eliminate meat consumption for health, environmental or respect for animals, the truth is that many people also choose this option for economic reasons. In some parts of the world where the crises are deep and affect spending and consumption, some people choose to remove meat from their daily dishes.

This is the case of an option that is being implemented, for example, in Venezuela and that is basically about eat the peel or skin of the banana as a vegetarian alternative to meat.

On a nutritional level, banana skin provides potassium, a mineral that helps stabilize blood pressure. It also contains dietary fiber, which helps relieve constipation and improve intestinal transit, and tryptophan, an amino acid that promotes the production of serotonin, which can affect a good mood.

In addition, it provides vitamin B6 and B12, magnesium, and protein. It is also rich in polyphenols and carotenoids, with possible antioxidant and anticancer effects.

Are all these properties enough to replace meat? We have to say that it is doubtful.

To stop eating meat, it is necessary to eat a balanced diet, guided by a professional who takes care of our health and, fundamentally, make the decision with conviction, without being pressured by economic issues.

Recipe to prepare banana skin “meat”

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg of green bananas
  • 3 chopped tomatoes
  • 1 onion
  • 2 peppers
  • 3 teaspoons of soy sauce
  • 1 drizzle of olive oil
  • Salt and pepper

Preparation:

Wash the peels or skins of the bananas well and boil them until they are soft. When this happens, remove them from the heat, drain them well and let them cool. When they have cooled, break them up with a fork as if you were scratching them vertically, along the skin.

Chop the onion and tomatoes into small cubes. Cut the peppers into thin strips. Place everything in a pot with oil and cook.

Then add the zest and soy sauce. Season with salt and pepper and cook a little more to integrate.
