Early Middle Ages: transition to the Feudal Mode of Production –

The history of the beginnings of Middle Ages in Europe (the call early middle ages) presents a certain complexity. We find ourselves before the disintegration of what was the Roman empire from the West. In addition to this, the baggage provided by the germanic peoples invaders and new forms of social organization in development. We propose to provide a framework for understanding this period of the medieval historythrough two core concepts: “transition” Y “Mode of production”.

The Middle Agesspanning from the end of the 5th century AD (476, fall of the western roman empire) until the mid-fifteenth century (1453drop of the Eastern Roman Empire), is a historical period of great complexity. For better understanding, historians have made a periodization of the medieval history. Although it may vary from one author to another, we will take the following as a reference:

  • EARLY MIDDLE AGES: begins at the end of the 5th century and goes until the end of the 8th century
  • HIGH MIDDLE AGES: spans the 9th to 11th centuries
  • MIDDLE AGES: begins at the beginning of the 12th century and reaches the middle of the 15th century

The early middle ages It is considered the period in which the transition to Feudal Production Mode. Well, this decontextualized phrase does not seem to explain much. So let’s see in our next article what these two important concepts mean in the study of history: “transition” and “Mode of production”:
