It seems like the dream come true of those who want to create a mini nation. A total of 80 people bought an island in the Caribbean to found their own country. The purchase was made through the crowdfunding “Let’s Buy an Island”.

The island is located off the coast of Belize
To get there, it is a short boat ride from Belize. For now, it is uninhabited and covers 1.2 acres. It only takes five minutes to go from one end to the other in its entirety.
Of such small dimensions, it was the focus of the “Let’s Buy an Island” project. In total, the 80 investors raised $250,000 to complete the purchase. It is a plan that has already accumulated 10 years in process.
What is striking is that it is fully creating a micro nation. In fact, in February 2022 the “first founders” arrived; who announced the creation of the new fief in a day of camping and snorkeling.

The tiny country will be called the Principality of Iceland
It is said that it will be an “experiment in democracy”. This has been expressed by Gareth Johnson, who has served as director of the “Let’s Buy an Island” program. It is a place where new and own laws will be created.
Is there a similar case? Well, this project is inspired by the case of Sealand, a floating platform in the North Sea that has declared itself as an independent micro-nation, something that has sparked comments.
The truth is that the small island of Coffee Caye was purchased at a cost of US$180,000 plus taxes. The transaction took place in December 2019, shortly before the start of the COVID restrictions.
At first, islands were sought in various places such as Canada, Ireland, the Philippines or the case of the auction of an island in Scotland. Finally, the crowdfunding group opted for a beautiful tropical and Caribbean setting.

Looking for more investors
The idea is to have a maximum of 150 participants. Those who make monetary contributions can obtain shares in the projects, as well as a vote in the congress of the nascent and promising Principality of Iceland.
How will this new nation sustain itself? The intention is to turn it into a tourist landmark: some tents, a small restaurant and hospitality. That same construction will be the seat of government and congress.
