Halloween is one of the favorite celebrations of Americans, who have managed to spread it to the rest of the world. Most likely, when Halloween approaches you always think of costume parties and the tradition of going house to house to ask for sweets, but in reality this is just the way it is celebrated today, and its history is much more interesting than you think.
The Spanish youtuber Rodrigo Septién explains its origin with a song. Although it seems like a recent tradition, it really dates back hundreds of years. Its origin is European and the country with the longest Halloween tradition is Ireland. It was the Irish who immigrated to the United States who really popularized the celebration.
At first it was an ancient Celtic festival related to the harvest, the “Samhain”. People lit bonfires and dressed up with the intention of scaring away evil spirits. Little by little it was integrated with the celebration of All Saints’ Day, on November 1, until the eve of this day became known as All Hallows Eve, which eventually became Halloween.
The song by this popular youtuber focuses mainly on Jack O’Lantern, a character from Irish folklore on which the famous carved pumpkins are based, which can never be missing at a costume party.
