Margaret Thatcher dies:

  • Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has died at the age of 87 from a stroke, the BBC has reported.
  • “It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announce that their mother the Baroness Thatcher has died peacefully after an attack this morning,” his spokesman announced to the British media, Lord Bell.
  • As soon as Thatcher’s death was announced, and that she was in power between 1979 and 1990, the first notes of condolence have been shown. Queen Elizabeth II has shown her regret upon hearing the news.

Margaret Thatcher Biography:

  • Margaret Roberts, maiden name of the former prime minister, became 1959 Member of Parliament for the constituency of Finchley, North London.
  • Born on October 13, 1925 in Grantham (northern England), the Tory politician came from a family of modest means.
  • Their first prominent position in politics was as Secretary of Education, and that allowed him to seize the Conservative Party candidacy from Prime Minister Edward Heath in 1975.
  • In 1979 he came to power, by becoming the first woman elected as British Prime Minister. Her politics were very popular and she was mainly characterized by neoliberal economics that pitted her against the then powerful British unions, which she defeated, especially during the miners’ strikes of the early 1980s.
  • In 1982 the victory in the Falklands War against Argentina it was worth the re-election the following year. She was elected again in 1987. Her toughness in debates and in the British chamber led her to be popularly known as the “Iron Lady” even today.
  • Thatcher left politics and obtained the title of Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven, in the county of Lincolnshire, which gave him a lifetime and non-hereditary right to be a member of the House of Lords.
