Looking for a wide angle for Sony? Choosing photographic material is always very complicated, by now you probably already know it, because looking for a wide angle lens It implies that, surely, you have already exhausted the possibilities of your kit, and you are looking for something more specific.
It’s not your first decision though the choice doesn’t necessarily get easier over time ;). That is why I have thought of making your job easier to help you choose an angle for your Sony camera.
These are the objectives that I am going to talk about:
- Sony FE 28mm f/2
- Samyang 12mm f/2 NCS CS
- Sony SEL 10-18 f/4
- Samyang E 24mm f/1.4 ED AS IF UMC
- Samyang AF 14mm F2.8 RF
Angular Objectives
We consider that a lens is wide angle, when it has an approximate focal length between 8mm and 25mm, and an approximate angle of view of 60º to 110º.
Remember to take into account, therefore, the crop (or conversion) factor of your camera when you are thinking about choosing one or another focal length. You do not know what it is? We explain it here.
I only anticipate that the conversion factor multiply the focal depending on the brand or model of your camera by values such as 1.5x or 1.6x.
This is important because, for example, if you’re looking at a 24mm on a cropped sensor camera, this will equate to a 36mm on a camera with a 1.5x crop factor (24mm x 1.5=36mm). So take a look before deciding on one focal length or another :).
Wide angle lenses are characterized by:
- Have a wide degree of vision, which allows you to cover a good portion of the scene in front of you. That is why they are the most recommended lenses for landscape photography or architecture (exterior or interior).
- Another of their characteristics is their great depth of field, which is why they are also the ideal companions for landscapers.
- The distance between the different planes is accentuated; things seem to be much further apart than they really are.
- Distort the lines, especially those closest to the borders of the image, where they seem to narrow. Also, planes closer to the target will be more affected by this distortion than those further away.
