I have traveled a lot and to countries with very diverse climates, however, over time I have learned about some basic clothing items for traveling to any destination and here are my recommendations of what you cannot miss in your suitcase.
1. Jeans
On more than one occasion I met travelers on my route through Southeast Asia who told me “I only brought shorts because I thought it would be hot during my entire trip.” And the reality is that even in the sunniest destinations sometimes the weather changes, to this we must add transport such as trains, planes and buses that are characterized by using air conditioning at very low temperatures. So jeans, in addition to being easy to combine, are essential for travel. And if your destination is cold, adding some leggings or something to wear underneath them is ideal to make them warmer.
2. Scarf, pashmina or scarf
No matter what you prefer, but never forget a scarf, pashmina or scarf on your trip. The material will depend on your destination (cold or hot), but I assure you that you will not regret wearing it since they not only help you create a different outfit on the trip, but are ideal for covering your head, shoulders or legs when you travel. enter a mosque, Catholic church, Buddhist or Hindu temple.
3. Swimsuit
It doesn’t matter if you go to the snow, to a beach resort or visit a mountain destination, in all these places you can find the opportunity to swim, often without planning it. Furthermore, bikinis or swimsuits take up so little space that it is definitely something that is best to always carry with you.
4. Dress
A casual dress that can be used to go out both day and night depending on the accessories you use is ideal for traveling. If you want something more creative you can wear a jumpsuit that does the same function.
5. Comfortable shoes
A pair of comfortable walking shoes cannot be missing either. Here the model will depend a lot on your destination, going to a snowy mountain is not the same as going to the beach. The important thing is that you are sure that you can walk long distances with them and, above all, that they are not new to prevent them from hurting you. I recommend a color/model that easily combines with the rest of the clothes you wear and preferably without a heel or platform to avoid extra checks when passing through security at airports.
6. Easy-to-match blouses/t-shirts
Including black, white or neutral colored blouses or t-shirts is ideal to combine with the rest of the clothes you wear. I recommend that they be without prints so that they are easier to use and with a couple of accessories you can give them more life.
7. Pareo (multipurpose bathroom exit)
If I became a fan of one piece of clothing while traveling through Asia, it was my multipurpose sarong, since it not only served me well over my swimsuit in different ways (skirt, dress, blouse…), but also as a towel, blanket for the beach and even to put it on the grass and have a picnic in a park.
8. Packable lightweight jacket
Nothing like a light jacket for traveling and I love the ones that are foldable and store in a small bag. They are super useful to always bring with you without getting in your way. You can find them on Amazon.com, click here.
9. Sunglasses
They are not exactly a garment but definitely a basic accessory for traveling regardless of the destination and climate. I normally travel with at least two (which I keep in the same case to save space) so I can combine them with the clothes I wear.
10. Tote bag
Ideally, the handbag that you will carry during the journey to your destination will serve you well during the trip, and even for a casual outing. Therefore, I recommend that in addition to having a good size, it is resistant and easy to combine. On my first trips I chose to use black bags because I considered them easier to combine with everything, however, in the last few I have changed radically and I travel with bags of many colors that can easily go with different clothes.
Regardless of which one you choose, what is very important is that: it is easy to carry (remember that you will spend many hours with it, so long straps are more recommended), that it is waterproof in case it rains, that it is resistant and that it is safe. (with closures and not easily opened by a pickpocket).
Extra tips
- If you are like this and like to wear different outfits during the trip, bring as many accessories as possible: headbands, scarves, necklaces… they take up little space and can create completely different outfits.
- Wear easy-to-match clothes to create new combinations.
- Wear light clothing, this way you can carry more options in fewer spaces.
- Wear clothes with double function. We all have a dress that can also be used as a blouse or tight jeans that can be rolled up to use as fishermen.
- Take a chance! You’re traveling and no one knows you, what better time to use that accessory that you weren’t very sure about, or a color that you wouldn’t wear to work or school.
