Ayurvedic medicine recommends cleaning the tongue every morning.

The tongue is the first line of defense of the immune system. It is an organ of vital importance in oral health, but also in general. Situated between the inner world and the outer world, it has a direct connection to the digestive system, especially the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine.

For Ayurveda, the traditional medicine of India, the layer that covers your tongue reflects the health of your digestive system. A healthy tongue has a pink hue covered with a thin whitish coating, however an unhealthy tongue will be covered with a thick yellow, white or gray coating.

Every night the body detoxifies and leaves the toxic material on the surface of the tongue. An unhealthy tongue is the product of the accumulation of a large amount of waste, toxins and bacteria. This can generate:

– Halitosis (bad breath)

– Gum problems

– Increased predisposition to caries

– Poor digestion

– Little sensitivity or inflammation of the taste buds

– Poor health in general

Is your tongue covered in a white or yellow coating? Do you recognize some of these discomforts? Ayurveda, which is the science of health, gives you the solution.

TONGUE CLEANER

This ancient medicine proposes a daily routine that benefits oral health and consists of scrape the tongue with a tongue cleaner to remove accumulated toxins. There are tongue scrapers made of plastic, copper and stainless steel. The recommended ones are those made of stainless steel due to their longer useful life. Brushing your tongue with a toothbrush is counterproductive as it pushes debris back onto your tongue.

You can get tongue cleaners at eco shops and Ayurvedic shops. If you want to start this practice today, you can use a spoon.

HOW TO USE IT?

Every morning, fasting, before brushing your teeth:

1. Open your mouth wide and stick your tongue out as far as you can.

2. Put the tongue scraper as far behind the tongue as possible, without causing you to gag.

3. Slide from behind to the tip of the tongue, repeating the movement 5 to 10 times. Do not do the reverse movement: always from the back to the front.

4. Wash off the cleaner after each pass.

5. At the end, rinse your mouth with warm water and clean the scraper with plenty of water.

When cleaning your tongue, you should not feel any pain or discomfort. Otherwise, the taste buds, which I am very sensitive, could become inflamed.
