August 15, 2021: Assumption Day of the Virgin –

Every August 15, a series of festivals dedicated to the Virgin Mary are celebrated in Spain, commemorating the date of her assumption. This is how in places like Guijón (Asturias) and Bilbao the patron saint festivities called the Great Week of Guijón are celebrated, in which Our Lady of Begoña, patron saint of Bilbao and Vizcaya, is venerated.

On the other hand, in Madrid the Virgen de la Paloma is venerated during these festivities, which enjoys great popular devotion. Curiously, the image of this Virgin is found in a painting, unlike the rest that are carved in wood. Numerous miracles are attributed to this virgin, who was venerated at first in a popular way, later reaching the Royal House. Today the procession is led by the Madrid firefighters, of whom this image is patron saint.

In Leganés (Madrid) processions are also held during this patron saint date, venerating Our Lady of Butarque, who is the patron saint of said municipality. Legend has it that in August 1117 an old miller found a virgin entangled in the grass. As he approached, he heard the commandment that the virgin entrusted to him: to build an altar and a temple, so that her wishes were fulfilled.

Going back to the Canary Islands, Tenerife and Candelaria, we can see that the Virgen de la Candelaria is venerated on August 15, one of the oldest invocations of the Virgin Mary. Popularly known as the Morenita, because of the color of her complexion, this Virgin comes from Tenerife, where she was her first appearance. But devotion to it is not only concentrated within Spain, but also in various American countries, such as Colombia, Mexico and Peru.

Finally, it is worth mentioning the Virgen de los Reyes, which every August 15 is taken out in procession throughout Seville on the occasion of celebrating the Assumption of the Virgin.
