Photographs taken by the International Space Station

The International Space Station ― known as the ISS, for its acronym in English ―, has used its Twitter account to publicize these images. They were captured while the ISS was flying over Russia and Kazakhstan.

The astronauts saw the lights when they were at a very high altitude: above 51.6° above the equator. They were fascinated with what they saw. Therefore, they did not hesitate to photograph and share.

It happens that the aurora borealis They have always been a phenomenon that everyone has loved. Those lights in the sky are a prodigy of nature. The point is that observing them from outer space gives us a very different perspective.

It can be said that these images are a beautiful gift. Likewise, they allow us to see the magnificence of our planet. An additional reason to preserve it and understand that it is our home in the universe.

Why are these beautiful lights seen in the sky?

They are the result of energy and particles from the sun. All this moves along the lines of the earth’s magnetic field, that is, towards the north and south poles. For this reason, it is in those areas where the auroras are appreciated.

Such particles, and energy radiations, collide with the atmosphere. The result? Well, the luminous demonstrations that everyone loves.

– Oxygen releases green and reddish lights.

– For its part, nitrogen glows with bluish and violet lights.

Both oxygen and nitrogen are gases present in our atmosphere. For this reason, the long-awaited northern lights have the aforementioned colors. In addition, they also display a colorful range when such colorations are mixed.

A show from earth and from space

There are areas that take advantage of this phenomenon as tourism potential, as is the case with Iceland and its northern lights. If so, the ISS offers an unusual vantage point to view this luminous, stellar game.

It remains to say that the ISS will be attentive to continue capturing these beautiful lights. Curiously, the northern lights have rarely been captured from space. Therefore, they are somewhat unprecedented images for all humans.
