The Bicentennial, 200 years of Argentine history

At the beginning of the 16th century, much of what is now known as Argentina it was under the mandate of the Spanish Empire, fully immersed in the era of colonialism. Encouraged by the success of Christopher Columbus, the Spanish Empire embarked on the conquest of the Americas, subduing if necessary the peoples who inhabited their lands. For more than two centuries the Spanish empire occupied more than a third of Argentina, until general discontent began the process of independence.

At the beginning of the 19th century, various insurgent movements took place. independentists in numerous territories of Latin America, almost all of them occupied by the Spanish empire, almost also of Mexico. Argentina was no exception and from the 18th century onwards voices began to emerge against the Bourbons, who further reduced the independence of the American kingdoms and transformed them into colonies totally dependent on the Spanish state.

The Argentine Independence has its origin in the May Revolution of 1810, date on which Viceroy Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisneros is deposed and the First Board of Government is appointed. From here develops the War of Independence of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata against Spain, a war that will last for 14 years.

Its end has to do with the arrival of the Anarchy, a political and military period that lasted from 1819 to 1823 and that stabilized the governments in the Argentine provinces. Even so, it must be said that the first years as an independent country were difficult, with constant infighting between unitarists and federalists.

Nowadays Argentina It has 43 million inhabitants and is the largest Spanish-speaking country in the world and the second largest country in Latin America after Brazil. It is also one of the most developed in South America and one of those with the best per capita income and quality of life records, along with Chile and Uruguay.
