Inauguration PEFF 2022, “The Witness is a Whale”

With the presence of its directors Nick Dean and Chery Dean.

Synopsis

A detective story that spans 60 years and half the world, The Witness Is a Whale documents the discovery of a massive illegal and secret slaughter of more than 200,000 whales by the Soviet Union and Japan in the 1960s, an act described by scientists as “one of the greatest environmental crimes of the 20th century”.

The Witness Is a Whale tells this story for the first time. What begins as an exposure of illegal Soviet whaling leads to a bigger, darker story, as former Soviet whalers accuse Japan of secretly killing whales, an act Japan has never confessed to, even now that they reinstate the commercial whaling.

This is accompanied by descriptions of the successful recovery of many whale populations and our growing scientific understanding of their importance in ocean ecosystems.
